Campus Diversity Planning Process
September 2006
Goal: Create a Campus Diversity Plan that has high campus-wide support which is a part of the established campus planning process.
Step 1 - Review and update the Campus Vision and Goals
Purpose: Ensure that the vision and goals for diversity written in 2001-02 reflect our current context and future aspirations. A campus-wide committee will review and recommend changes to the campus vision and goals.
*NEW* - Give feedback on the first draft!
Please take a moment to read the Jan. 8, 2007 draft of the campus vision and goals for diversity then fill out our feedback form to help shape our vision for diversity at IUPUI.
Timeframe: Complete Step 1 by December 1, 2006.
Step 2 - Awareness & Engagement
Purpose: Increase commitment to the campus vision and goals for diversity through individual and group examination and reflection.
Discussion is the process to integrate diversity into all facets of campus mission and practice. Constructing confidence and competence across the campus regarding what diversity means to us personally and to informing us in regards to our unique role on campus is the primary goal of Step 2.
Review by individuals and groups of individuals to honestly assess current practice and attitudes to perhaps rearrange some mental or behavioral assumptions, in order to form a plan for change.
Timeframe: On-going.
Step 3: Training & Professional Development
Purpose: The purpose of the training and professional development step is to;
- Create safe places to explore diversity related issues and create change; and
- Develop innovative training and professional development solutions in anticipation of conflicts that typically can occur during this process.
Timeframe: On-going.
Step 4: Action
Purpose: Mapping out a specific plan for campus-wide and school specific action. Must take action across the campus in that planning and practice is not to be relegated to a few but is the opportunity for individuals at all levels to participate.
Examine the structure and context of our work campus-wide and school specific in order to improve.
Move to plan and organize more systematically by completing a 2007-08 Campus Diversity Plan and School Diversity Plans plan by May 15, 2007 as a part of the regular campus annual planning process.
Step 5: Assessment
Description: Assess progress of campus, school, and administrative actions and monitor status of Diversity Performance Indicators.
Timeframe: On-going.
