New Way to Synthesize Quantum Dots Created
United Press International, April 4 – IUPUI researchers have developed a new way to make quantum dots – highly fluorescent, colorful particles that latch on to proteins and other molecules of interest inside cells.

IUPUI Names New Executive Vice Chancellor, Dean of Faculties
Inside Indiana Business, March 29 – IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz announces that physicist Uday Sukhatme, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, will be the next executive vice chancellor and dean of faculties, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees. Sukhatme will succeed William M. Plater, who will become the founding director of the Workshop on International Community Development, a newly focused initiative to combine and coordinate efforts in international community development.

Goodwill Recognizes IU School of Dentistry and IU Physical Therapy Department
The IU School of Dentistry and the IU Physical Therapy Department have been named Goodwill’s 2006 Partners of the Year. Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana, Inc. has maintained a partnership with the School of Dentistry and the Physical Therapy Department to bring health-related services to Goodwill’s Commercial Services employees and others at Goodwill. Those partnerships will be honored on April 7, 2006, at Goodwill’s Little Black Dress Ball at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.

High Good Cholesterol More Important Than Low Bad Cholesterol For Heart Protection
Medical News Today (UK), April 4 – Having a high level of HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol) is more important than having a low level of LDL (the bad cholesterol) in protecting individuals from heart attack, according to a study published in the March issue of American Heart Journal by researchers from the IU School of Medicine, located on the IUPUI campus, and pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, Inc.

But large U.S. corporations, he figured, “gave 17 percent of total hurricane-related giving in 2005, 29 percent of the tsunami relief, and 58 percent of the relief for the Pakistan earthquake."

Colleges Pushed to Prove Worth: Standardized Testing at the University Level?
Philadelphia Inquirer, March 28 – IUPUI Vice Chancellor Trudy Banta is quoted in article on the use of standardized tests. Banta, a professor of higher education at IUPUI and an assessment expert, said special assignments, such as capstone courses or a senior thesis – combined with satisfaction surveys and scores on graduate and professional school exams – are better indicators of student achievement than standardized tests. “We all love simple, easy answers,” she said. “But this isn't a simple, easy issue.”

It's Time to Change Hour Ways; Hoosiers Must Now Figure out DST's Perks, Drawbacks
Indianapolis Star, April 2 – Article on change to daylight saving time quotes two IUPUI professors. Suzanne Steinmetz, a professor of sociology at IUPUI, finds it humorous that some people are making a big deal of the change – sort of like an Indiana version of the Y2K panic. Steinmetz said, “The bottom line is that, within a couple of days, a week or a month, most people won't think anything about it.” Most people should make the adjustment to a new sleep pattern within a week or so, said Dr. Bianca Lang, an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the IU School of Medicine.

Columbus Dispatch, Tuesday, March 28 – Ohio State University can be proud of its partnership with IUPUI to research and catalog information about the thousands of surviving Vietnam veterans who lost arms, legs, hands and feet in that conflict, said this editorial. Along with helping those deserving veterans get medical attention they may have been lacking for years, the project will ensure even-better care for the men and women returning maimed from the Iraq war.

Indianapolis Star, March 23 – Article quotes IUPUI professor on whether President Bush’ s appearance in Indianapolis will be a boost for U.S. Rep. Mike Sodrel even though the president’s popularity has been sagging in Indiana. “It’s still an advantage,” said Bill Blomquist, a political scientist at IUPUI. “It would have been greater in 2002 or 2004 than it will be in 2006, but I am sure that the Sodrel campaign would rather have a visit than not.”
