IUPUI Chancellor Appoints Assistant Chancellor for Diversity

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Chancellor Charles R. Bantz today (Feb. 22, 2008) announced the appointment of Kenneth B. Durgans as assistant chancellor for diversity, equity, and inclusion, pending approval by the Indiana University Board of Trustees.

As assistant chancellor for diversity, equity, and inclusion, Durgans will serve as the campus's full-time chief diversity officer and will report directly to the chancellor.

Study Looks at New Approaches in Handling Juvenile Delinquents

The juvenile justice system's traditional method of dealing with juvenile delinquents is beginning to undergo a transformation, a study by Indiana University School of Social Work Professor Bill Barton has found.

Barton's discoveries will be published by Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago.

Barton will discuss his findings at a brown bag lunch from 12:00 to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, in room ES4130 in the Education and Social Work Building.

United Way of America, Center on Philanthropy

In a speech today at the Economic Club of Indiana, United Way of America President Brian Gallagher will announce that United Way of America and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, located on the campus of IUPUI, will develop a new partnership made possible by a $6 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to United Way.

The collaboration among three of the nation's leading nonprofit sector organizations will include research and new training courses that will help develop future United Way leaders across the country and around the world.


"Both the Center on Philanthropy and the United Way of America will benefit from this partnership in exciting ways," said N. Clay Robbins, president of Lilly Endowment. "The Center on Philanthropy is a national leader in discovering and understanding philanthropy trends and translating that new knowledge into effective practices for nonprofits..."

As her lunchtime audience settled into a room on the third floor of the Campus Center Thursday, Dr. Lorraine Blackman began a conversation she hopes will lead to changes that could affect the lives of not only students, but the community that surrounds the IUPUI campus.

As more than 30 people munched on sandwiches, Blackman, an associate professor in the Indiana University School of Social Work, gave the first TRIP Dialogue Space luncheon lecture.

Translating Research into Practice or TRIP for short, in essence involves research that solves problems people face in their everyday lives.

Herron Welcomes Indianapolis Art Collector, Journalist and Author Michael K. Corbin

Join Michael K. Corbin as he lectures about the connection between art collecting, life and emerging artists. He will share advice for art enthusiasts and emerging artists, as well as photographs of art from his own collection. Also, Corbin will talk about his new book, "The Art of Everyday Joe: A Collector's Journal," at the Herron School of Art & Design on Tuesday, February 26 at 11:30am in the Basile Auditorium, 735 West New York Street, Indianapolis. An informal Q & A will follow the lecture, which is free and open to the public.
