IU and IUPUI Sponsor Upcoming Intel International Science and Engineering Fair
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair will bring the top 1,500 science and engineering high school students to Indianapolis on May 7-13. These students will be competing for more than $3 million in scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prize: a $50,000 college scholarship.
The fair is the opportunity to show these students, many of whom have never been to Indiana, the exciting research and programs at the IUPUI and IU. At IUPUI, the students can choose to learn about biomedical engineering, environmental monitoring at the Lilly ARBOR, or DNA extraction and advanced medical visualization.
Throughout the week, IUPUI and IU will have an ever-changing presence in the corporate and education exhibit hall. The exhibit will highlight technology with 3-D imaging on the John-E-Box and green screen as well as offer hands-on activities including matching shoe prints to determine if they could have been from the shoe of a criminal.
On Thursday and Friday of the week, a separate educational exhibit hall will open with activities designed for 8,000 area middle and high school students as well as the general public. There, IUPUI and IU will be represented by the Indiana Robotic Vehicle (IRV), the Mitsubishi Robotic Arm and more.
IU and IUPUI will also be awarding scholarships to participants in each of the 14 judging categories. The scholarships will be for $5,000 per year for up to four years.
Faculty from all of the IU campuses will be serve as grand award judges for the event.

Leading Dental Researcher Discusses Multidisciplinary Science at IU School of Dentistry Research Day
Dianne Rekow, D.D.S., Ph.D., newly elected president of the American Association for Dental Research, will deliver the keynote address at the School of Dentistry’s 14th Annual Research Day, to be held on the first floor of the school on Wednesday, April 12, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Her 45-minute talk, titled “Multidisciplinary Science: Discovering How and Why Posterior All-Ceramic Crowns Fail,” begins at 1:15 p.m. in room S116.
Rekow chairs the Department of Basic Science and Craniofacial Biology at New York University College of Dentistry, and directs the college’s Translational Research program.
At NYU, Rekow is stepping up efforts to close the gap between basic science and clinical researchers. She is committed to encouraging basic scientists and clinical researchers to share information as a means of increasing the prospects for translational research — so called because it translates novel basic science findings into testable hypotheses that may ultimately be integrated into clinical practice.
In addition to her dental degree, Rekow holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, a specialty certificate in orthodontics, and an MBA.
Research Day also features IU-generated research posters and table clinics, including projects that were recently presented by faculty, students, and staff at the American Association for Dental Research conference in Orlando, Fla.
Research Day is free and open to all university faculty, staff, and students. For more information, contact Dominique Galli, Ph.D., dgalli@iupui.edu. |
