IU DENTISTRY PROFESSORS IN NATIONAL MEDIA SPOTLIGHT FOR NEW CAVITY DETECTION METHOD
Researchers at the IU School of Dentistry (IUSD) at IUPUI are working to perfect a painless technology that uses light to spot early tooth decay before the dentist can see it.

Dr. George Stookey, IUSD distinguished professor and associate dean for research, was featured in the October 30 issue of U.S. News and World Report and a recent issue of the New York Times after presenting at the national American Dental Association conference on his research on this topic.

When dentists detect cavities with current methods they must often cut into the tooth to remove the decay and restore the tooth with a filling. The new technology would allow dentists to detect the decay before fillings or other extensive corrective measures are needed. Instead, dentists may be able to stop or reverse early decay by performing preventive measures such as fluoride applications and sealants.
