JOSEPH T. TAYLOR SYMPOSIUM AND AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY
(Above - top picture) Judy O'Bannon, wife of Governor Frank O'Bannon, delivers the morning keynote address for the 12th annual Joseph T. Taylor Symposium held March 8 at University Place Conference Center. The theme for the event was "Building Community: Civil Society in Urban America." This year's symposium opened with a video tribute to Dr. Taylor who died last year.

(Above - second picture) Hertha Ward Taylor, widow of Joseph T. Taylor, received the first IUPUI award given in honor of her husband, the first dean of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Judy O'Bannon and IUPUI Chancellor Gerald L. Bepko presented the crystal, flame-shaped Dr. Joseph T. Taylor Award for Excellence in Diversity to Mrs. Taylor during a ceremony at the symposium. Taylor's children, Hussain and Judith, were also present during the ceremony.

IU MARKS ANNIVERSARY OF AGREEMENT THAT PROVIDED SOFTWARE TO THOUSANDS
Since the University Information Technology Services Center for Statistical and Mathematical Computing (State/Math Center) negotiated a university wide license agreement with SPSS, Inc., for statistical software a year ago, more than 3,000 CDs with a value of at least $5.4 million have been distributed.

A new book by English Assistant Professor Mary Trotter looks at the role of theatrical performance in politics during Ireland's struggle for independence from Britain at the turn of the century.

Underwater archaeologist George Bass, considered the father of nautical Archaeology, visited the Ransom Place Learning Center where artifacts uncovered by IUPUI anthropology students during local digs are on display. Bass lectured to an overflow crowd on March 6 in the Ruth Lilly Auditorium. He was the guest speaker for the John D. Barlow Lecture in Humanities sponsored by the IU School of Liberal Arts. Bass discussed his discovery of one of the world's oldest known shipwrecks.

Don Carlisle dunking IUPUI basketball teams reach new heights in tournament play

The men's and women's basketball teams at IUPUI didn't make it to the final round of the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament, but both teams set school history by making it to second round of tournament play.

STUDY BY IUPUI PROFESSORS EXAMINES DEPRESSION IN STROKE CAREGIVERS
Strokes inflict a heavy toll on caregivers. Studies show that not only do a third of stroke survivors suffer depression, but at least as many caregivers do as well. The IUPUI study looks at what causes this depression and shows the need for more programs and education to support caregivers.

POLICE CADET PROGRAM AT IUPUI OFFERS STUDENTS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY
The two-year Police Cadet program at IUPUI enables full-time students to become certified police officers and get real-world policing experience while earning their undergraduate degrees. Graduates of the program have gone on to work for the Indianapolis Police Department, FBI, Secret Service and the Department of Defense.
