In a staged reading of the 2,300-year-old Greek comedy "Lysistrata," Beth Barnes (left) as Lysistrata and Jan DeWester (right) as Calonice discuss plans to end the Peloponnesian war by taking over the treasury and refusing to have sex with their husbands. Barnes is an instructor of English and a graduate student at IUPUI. DeWester is a lecturer in the communication studies department. Approximately 250 people attended the reading which was directed by IUPUI English Professor Mary Trotter and performed March 3 at the American Cabaret Theatre as part of the Lysistrata Project, a global performance event for peace.

Grant Writing Class Leads to $20,000 Windfall
Most students expect their hard work in class to pay off eventually, but SLIS graduate Pamela Anderson didn’t expect the $20,000 outcome of her SLIS coursework. Anderson directed a grant-writing campaign for the Benton County Public Library, which resulted in the library’s $20K award though Ameritech’s SBC Excelerator Grant Program. The monies will finance a wireless laptop lab that can be used to reach underserved populations in the rural northwestern Indiana community.

IUPUI women’s basketball player Tiffany Kyser (Indianapolis, Ind./Culver Girls Academy/School of Education) was named 2002-03 First Team Verizon Academic All-American for the University Division of Women’s Basketball today. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members must have first been selected First Team Academic All-District and are chosen in a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-American Committee.
