Indiana University Scholarship of Engagement Conference

The Indiana University Scholarship of Engagement Conference will be held on campus on Friday, February 22, 2002: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The university-wide conference highlights the scholarship and practice of service learning, civic engagement, and campus-community partnership programs and brings scholars, staff, student affairs professionals, students, community partners, and administrators from all eight IU campuses together to share existing research and praxis.

The conference will begin with a keynote address, “Where’s the Scholarship in Civic Engagement?” by Lorilee Sandmann, associate vice president for public service and outreach and executive director of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education at the University of Georgia.

Sandmann has distinguished herself as a leader in higher education, public outreach, and the scholarship associated with this work. Prior to her current appointment, Sandmann was the vice provost for institutional effectiveness and strategic partnerships at Cleveland State University, and she held teaching and executive leadership positions in outreach at Michigan State University and the University of Minnesota. Sandmann, in collaboration with Amy Driscoll, coordinates the National Review Board for the Scholarship of Engagement to provide external peer review and evaluation of faculty’s scholarship of engagement.

Faculty and staff will be able to share current research and scholarship associated with service learning, civic engagement, participatory action research, and campus-community partnerships during morning breakout sessions. The breakout sessions will highlight good practice and stimulate further ideas for the scholarship of engagement. Lunch will be provided and during lunchtime, each campus will display information on programs and resources for good practice. The afternoon will feature workshops to provide faculty, staff, and administrators with practical tools to improve the practice and assessment of service learning and civic engagement.

This year’s conference will be hosted by the IUPUI Center for Service and Learning.
