Cast Elected to Head IU Board of Trustees

William R. Cast, M.D., has been elected to a two-year term as president of the Indiana University Board of Trustees. Cast, a Fort Wayne physician and surgeon, succeeds Stephen L. Ferguson, who steps down after serving two consecutive two-year terms as president.
The board elected officers for 2009-11 during its business meeting today (Aug. 14) at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Campus Center. It elected Trustee Patrick A. Shoulders vice president, Robin Roy Gress secretary, Dorothy Frapwell assistant secretary, MaryFrances McCourt treasurer and Stewart T. Cobine assistant treasurer.

Reception for IUPUI Honors College Set August 27

A reception celebrating the founding of the IUPUI Honors College will be held August 27 in Scholars Hall at University Place Conference Center.
For the record books, August 27 will be the official opening day of the college.
The reception begins at 4 p.m. It will feature remarks from IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz¸ Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty Uday Sukhatme, Honors College Founding Dean Jane Luzar, and Undergraduate Student Government President Brady Harman.

English Program for Japanese Women Focuses on Leadership Skills

Twenty-six university students from Tokyo arrived in Indianapolis August 1 to be part of an intensive English and American culture program at IUPUI. The women will spend three weeks here honing their English skills and learning what it takes to be a leader.

School of Science Announces New Physics Chair
The School of Science announced Dr. Andrew D. Gavrin will serve as the new Chair of the Department of Physics beginning August 1, 2009 for a four year term. Dr. Gavrin is well known for his efforts in physics education and research on the physics of nanostructured magnetic materials.

Law Professor Lectures on History of Human Rights and International Trade

On July 23 and 24, 2009, IU School of Law-Indianapolis Professor George E. Edwards participated in an international conference in Taipei, Taiwan sponsored by the Asian Centre for the World Trade Organization and International Health Law and Policy. The WTO Centre is part of New Taiwan University, the premier university in Taiwan.
At the Taipei conference, Professor Edwards delivered a paper entitled "Human Rights and International Trade: From the 17th Century Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade to Hurricane Katrina, the World Trade Organization (WTO), Human Trafficking and the Right to Health."
