IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz will deliver the State of the Campus Address, entitled "From Idea to Impact: 5 Years in the Journey to 40," at 4 p.m. on November 11, in Room 450 A at the Campus Center. Students, staff and faculty are invited to attend.

Stopping to Smell the Flowers

Kevin Shen, 3, finds out whether a wildflower smells during the Waycross Camp weekend for children enrolled in IUPUI's Center for Young Children and for parents of those children.
This year's annual camp, Sept. 27 and Sept. 28, coincided with a nationally proclaimed "Take a Child Outside" week. The event provided opportunities for families to connect with one another as they hiked, fished and shared campfire stories.

A watercolor painting of Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps is one of the features of a new exhibit at the National Art Museum of Sport on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus.
The exhibit, "James Fiorentino and Friends," runs through March 15, 2009, at NAMOS, located in the University Place Conference Center and Hotel at IUPUI, 850 W. Michigan St.

Candidate Credits IU MSW Degree for Key Skills, Knowledge

Earlier this year, Gabrielle Campo was feeling sick and left work early on a Friday. She went home, took some flu medication and promptly fell asleep.
"I woke up at 6 a.m. on Saturday and realized - nothing has ever been more clear - I was going to run for Congress," said Campo, who graduated with a MSW degree in 2006 from the Indiana University School of Social Work.
Her realization came only a few days before a special election would be held by the Republican and Democratic parties to choose a candidate to run for the 7th District Congressional seat left vacant by the death of U.S. Congresswoman Julia Carson (D-Indianapolis.)

Lake Institute Distinguished Visitor

Eboo Patel, Ph.D., is shown at a book signing during his Oct. 21, 22 trip to Indianapolis as the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving Distinguished Visitor. Patel is the founder of Chicago's Interfaith Youth Core, an international organization that enables young people to bridge religious traditions. Patel's book, "Acts of Faith," details his struggle for identity as an Indian Muslim in America and the path that led to the creation of IFYC. The Lake Institute is a program of the Center on Philanthropy at IUPUI. Patel's visit included presentations before area high school students and college students interested in religious and philanthropic studies.

IU Dental School Faculty and Staff Honored for Teaching, Community Service
Three IU School of Dentistry professors and one dental assistant were honored during the school's annual faculty and staff conferences in October 2008.
Dr. William Babler received the Indiana Dental Association's Outstanding Faculty Award in recognition of his body of work since joining the IU faculty in 2002....
The Indiana Dental Association bestowed its Outstanding Teacher Award on Dr. L. Jack Windsor in recognition of his service during the past academic year....
The 2008 Donald W. Johnson Community Service Awards were presented to Ms. Octavia McIlwain, a dental assistant in Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology; and Dr. Andréa Ferreira Zandoná, associate professor of preventive and community dentistry.

IU School of Nursing Faculty Inducted as Fellows into the NLN Academy of Nursing Education
Donna Boland, PhD, Pamela Ironside, PhD, RN, FAAN and Melinda Swenson, PhD, RN, FAANP, faculty at the Indiana University School of Nursing, were three of 24 fellows who were formally inducted into the National League for Nursing (NLN) Academy of Nursing Education on September 20, 2008 during the NLN Education Summit in San Antonio, Texas. The fellows, selected by the NLN Board of Governors, the oversight body for the Academy, have been chosen for their sustained and significant contributions to the field of nursing education.

IUSON Researcher Part of New NIH Research Initiative to Test Treatments for Menopausal Symptoms
Janet S. Carpenter, PhD, RN, professor in the Department of Adult Health at the Indiana University School of Nursing, Indianapolis, is one of many researchers involved in a new research initiative from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Women troubled by hot flashes and night sweats during the years around menopause want safe, effective treatment options. The initiative establishes a multi-site research network to conduct clinical trials of promising treatments for the most common symptoms of the menopausal transition.

Business Outlook Panel to Provide Economic Forecast For 2009
This year was a "very tricky year" for economists to anticipate, and forecasters who will present the Indiana University Business Outlook Panel forecast acknowledge that 2009 "could be even more challenging."
For more than three decades, the Kelley School of Business has presented its national, state and local forecasts through a series of presentations in 10 Indiana cities.

IU President Michael A. McRobbie’s 2008 State of the University speech is now available on the Internet in text and video formats. The speech reviews the record-setting accomplishments of all IU campuses and lays out the course for achieving continued and growing excellence in the core missions, education and research.

IUPUI Students Win First and Second Place in Celebrate IU Contest
Indiana University students created more than 50 videos highlighting their favorite aspects of the university for a recent "Celebrate IU" student video contest. The contest, now in its second year, is part of the university's "Celebrate IU" festivities, a month of special events at all eight IU campuses that began Oct. 1. IU asked students to share their university spirit with the world by creating 60-second videos and uploading them to the popular video sharing Web site YouTube.

IUPUI Receives $1 Million Grant to Improve Minority Student Success in College Science Programs
IUPUI and Ivy Tech Community College are partners in a new program to guide under-represented minority students through the rigors of college science degree programs. The Bridges to the Baccalaureate (Bridges) Program is funded by a $938,771 grant from the National Institutes of Health, a $80,000 gift from Eli Lilly and Company Foundation and private support from community leaders.
