IU President McRobbie to Discuss State of the University

Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie will deliver his first State of the University address on Tuesday (Oct. 14) at 1:30 p.m. in the University Place Conference Center Auditorium on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus.
In the address, McRobbie, who became IU's 18th president in July 2007, is expected to provide an update on the strategic priorities he announced during his 2007 inaugural address, including increasing the amount of space available for teaching and research, furthering the university's international presence, and strengthening the university's life sciences infrastructure and programs in the interest of statewide economic development.

Speeding Dean-mans

It will be "Mario" vs. "A.J." in the IUPUI Challenge of the Deans on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, at the Sports Car Club of America Autocross at Grissom Aeroplex in Peru, Ind.
"Mario" Oner Yurtseven, dean of the School of Engineering and Technology and "A.J." Bob White, former dean of the School of Liberal Arts, will take turns at the wheel of the IUPUI Student Project Racecar in a race against each other for the best time. The event starts at 10:15 a.m.

IU Center for Health Policy to Host Gubernatorial Candidates' Forum on Health Care
Voters are invited to learn the Indiana gubernatorial candidates' positions on health care and health policy at a forum hosted by public policy educators and students at IUPUI. The event is set for 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, in the University Library's Lilly Auditorium and will feature representatives for each major-party candidate presenting details of their respective candidates' plans.

The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center has been recognized as a premier cancer center for the third time by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
Since 1999, the IU Simon Cancer Center has carried the prestigious NCI designation. This year, the NCI awarded the IU Simon Cancer Center a five-year, $6.5 million support grant following a multi-step competitive process.

Indianapolis Associate Professor Karen Bravo on October 25, 2008, will join an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars in commemorating the 1808 federal law banning the importation of slaves into the United States. The University of Toledo College of Law is hosting this conference, entitled "Commemorating 1808: Fighting for the Right to Dream," on an auspicious date - the 200th anniversary of this landmark decision.

IUPUI Down Syndrome Researcher Forms Buddy Walk Team
Thousands of people are expected to participated in the October 11th "Buddy Walk," at White River State Park, a Down Syndrome Indiana event to raise awareness and support for individuals with Down syndrome. Down syndrome, or Trisomy 21, affects more than 350,000 individuals in the U.S. and occurs in one in every 733 births. It is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 that alters development and results in the characteristic features associated with Down syndrome.
