We expect Ph.D. students to not merely produce scholarship about significant social issues, but be prepared to enter organizations that actively work toward their resolution.
Through extensive engagement with strategic partners, IUPUI's doctoral program in American studies recruits and trains students for well-defined tracks that apply the humanities and social sciences directly to community-defined problems. IUPUI seeks to demonstrate with measurable success how the liberal arts can work for, and with, organizations, agencies, and companies that have a variety of profiles—from healthcare and parks to municipal, state, and regional agencies.
