IUPUI
University Writing Center

Faculty Resources

The University Writing Center is dedicated to assisting both experienced and inexperienced writers with all types of composition, fostering productive discourse between students and their classroom instructors, and helping IUPUI maintain its tradition of serious academic instruction in a positive, open, and intellectually- stimulating environment. To that end, we have collected some resources specifically for faculty members who are assigning writing projects.

At the beginning of every semester, our tutors make visits to writing classes all over campus. With a limited number of staff, however, we cannot always reach every class that includes a writing project. If you would like to introduce the Writing Center's services to your students in a more humorous way, we have created the video file below that you might consider sharing with them.

The Nightly Show(38.1 mp4 file) : An entertaining look at what we do at the University Writing Center, this (bad) spoof on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart requires QuickTime 7.4 or better

FOR INSTRUCTORS REQUIRING THEIR STUDENTS TO VISIT THE UWC AS PART OF AN ASSIGNMENT: Please click here for some important information that will make your students' visits more useful for them and you.

FOR INSTRUCTORS WANTING TO INCLUDE UWC INFORMATION ON THEIR SYLLABI: Please use the following paragraph as a starting point for syllabus information:

Even the best writers can benefit from a resource like the University Writing Center. Writing Center appointments are generally a half-hour, and they should be made ahead of time. Tutors can assist you at any point in the writing process, from understanding the assignment and planning the paper to citing sources and final revisions. I encourage you to take advantage of this free service throughout the semester. To schedule a tutoring session, call 274-2049 or 278-8171.

FOR INSTRUCTORS RECOMMENDING ACES SUPPORT TO THEIR NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKING STUDENTS - The ACademic English Support (ACES) tutors are faculty members, specially trained in TESOL, who assist non-native English writers with editing of final drafts, revision for late concerns, English sentence structure, and diction. ACES tutoring takes place only in the University Library location of the University Writing Center (UL2125). Hours vary per semester, and session availability is limited. If you have specific questions about ACES, please contact the University Writing Center. For a handout you can print and distribute to your students, click here.

FOR INSTRUCTORS ASSIGNING RESEARCH PAPERS -The University Writing Center collaborates with the University Library's Research Help Desk in UL2125 to help students locate current, credible, authoritative sources. Click here for more information about this unique collaboration.
