Top fundraisers for United Way of Central Indiana put a full-court press on local business executives over the past year, and it paid off. On Wednesday, the six-county United Way umbrella group reported a record $39 million in corporate and individual contributions to its 2007 campaign.
In a speech today at the Economic Club of Indiana, United Way of America President Brian Gallagher will announce that United Way of America and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, located on the campus of IUPUI, will develop a new partnership made possible by a $6 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to United Way.
The collaboration among three of the nation's leading nonprofit sector organizations will include research and new training courses that will help develop future United Way leaders across the country and around the world.
This past Monday IUPUI hosted its first ever Cornhole Bowl and Colts tailgating party to benefit the United Way. The single elimination tournament featured an appearance from the Colts cheerleaders and had a grand prize of two tickets to the Colts vs. Jacksonville game. The Spot spoke with Stacy Ruffino the coordinator for the United Way campaign about the event.
UPUI is looking for volunteers as the campus collaborates with IPS and the United Way in the new "ReadUp" initiative. ReadUp is a reading program to help IPS fourth graders sharpen their reading skills.
It is said that about 30% of all IPS fourth graders are reading two or more grades below their current grade level. Volunteers who can serve one hour a week can help alleviate that problem.
