The Indiana University School of Medicine Transitional Year Residency Program is primarily based at Clarian Methodist Hospital. Twelve positions are available, and applications should be made through the ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). The Transitional Year program is supported by the Specialty Residency Programs of Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Radiation Oncology, and Radiology, all of which require a prerequisite clinical year prior to entry. We work with each of these Specialty Programs to assist each transitional resident in tailoring his or her academic experience. Transitional year requirements include six months of fundamental clinical skills (FCS) that must include one month of Emergency Medicine and one month of an Ambulatory Medicine experience. The six months of fundamental clinical skills must be taken in the primary specialties of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, or Family Medicine. Our program requires that one of FCS rotations be on the ICU service at Clarian Methodist because this month is universally viewed as extraordinarily valuable by Transitional, Internal Medicine, Surgery and Emergency Medicine residents. Specialty Residency programs have requirements for the Transitional Year that vary slightly from one another, and these are easily met in our Program. By their own choice, most residents spend the bulk of the year at Clarian Methodist Hospital; however, virtually any rotation offered in the IU teaching hospitals (Methodist, Riley Children’s, Indiana University, Veterans Administration and Wishard Hospitals) is available for our residents. Our curriculum offers the flexibility of inpatient or outpatient academic or private practice settings, bench or clinical research experiences and out-of-state or out-of-country rotations. We offer special electives in Orbital Dissection and Microvascular Surgery for all ophthalmology-bound trainees and up to three months of radiology electives for radiology-bound trainees. Exceptional ICU, Cardiology and pain management rotations are available for anesthesia-bound residents. Didactics are available from any department in the School of Medicine and include clinical conferences emphasizing fundamental clinical skills covered on USMLE Part 3, morbidity and mortality conferences, monthly journal clubs, and book clubs. The Indiana University School of Medicine also sponsors a preliminary year in Internal Medicine that may be suitable for some candidates who plan residencies in other specialties.
