Transplant Surgery Section

Dr. A. Joseph Tector directs the Transplant Surgery section. Other members of the transplant faculty include Drs. Jonathan A. Fridell (Surgical Director of Pancreas Transplantation), William C. Goggins (Surgical Director of Renal Transplantation for IU and Riley), Martin L. Milgrom, Mark D. Pescovitz, John Powelson and Rodrigo Viana (Surgical Director of Small Bowel and Multivisceral Transplantation).

Overall, the transplant program at Clarian, which includes Indiana University Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children and Methodist Hospital, was ranked third in the country by volume for total number of transplants with 604 transplants performed in 2005. This included 176 livers, 283 kidneys, 60 pancreas and 15 intestinal transplants.

Due to the sudden increase in volume over the last four years, Indiana University also boasts one of the shortest waiting times in the country with excellent outcomes. Three out of the five simultaneous liver pancreas transplants performed in the country over the last three years were performed at this center. In June of 2005 the small intestine and multi-visceral transplantation program achieved Medicare approval, which makes this program the seventh in the country to obtain this goal.

The Transplant Surgery section offers a comprehensive American Society of Transplantation accredited abdominal transplantation fellowship. In addition, an elective for medical students or residents wishing to visit our facility is available. For more information, please visit the Clarian Health Partners Transplant Web site.

Heart and lung transplants are performed by the Cardiovascular-Thoracic Service.
