General Surgery Section
The Section of General Surgery cares for patients at the University, Methodist, Clarian North, Clarian West, Veterans Administration and Wishard Memorial Hospitals. The Department has an active minimally invasive surgery program that includes bariatric surgery.
All of the integrated facilities manage patients with cancer, gastrointestinal, endocrine and general vascular disorders. Metabolic and nutritional considerations are also stressed on these busy services. Excellent clinical and diagnostic facilities support the General Surgery Program at each of the integrated facilities.
Residents are assigned to the General Surgical services at all integrated hospitals during the six-year training program. Third and fourth-year medical students are also assigned to those services and work in close contact with the house staff and faculty. Dr Eric A. Wiebke is the Section Director. Other full-time members of the section faculty include Drs. Keith D. Lillemoe, David Canal, Robert Goulet, Thomas Howard, Lewis Jacobson, Henry Pitt, David Matthews, Max Schmidt, Don Selzer, Attila Nakeeb, Sue Clare, Clark Simons, Robert Pennington, Gerardo Gomez, Eric Streib, Mary Malucchio, Chris Touloukian, Samer Mattar, Judiann Miskulin, Dennis Blom, Mark Falimirski, Nick Zyromski, PR Kennedy, Tim Hayward, Timothy Pohlman, Bruce Robb, Erika Rager, and Imtiaz Munshi. These individuals perform a wide spectrum of tertiary gastrointestinal, pancreatic and hepato-biliary, oncologic, colorectal, minimally invasive, endocrine, and bariatric surgery. Dr. Canal is Chief of Surgery at Wishard Hospital and Dr. Wiebke is head of the General Surgery Service at University Hospital. Dr. Matthews is head of the General Surgery Service at the VA Hospital.
There are active investigational programs in General Surgery with emphasis on cancer research. The Breast Disease Center is directed by Dr. Robert J Goulet, Jr., assisted by Drs. Clare, Kennedy and Pennington. The research component is led by Dr Harikrishna Nakshatri, Ph.D. and Sue E. Clare, M.D., Ph.D. The GI oncology research effort is spearheaded by C. Max Schmidt, MD, Ph.D. and Hongmiao Sheng, Ph.D. and supported by Michelle Yip-Schneider Ph.D. and Mary Mallucio M.D. The GI physiology research effort is led by Drs. Pitt and Sitzmann. Dr. Touloukian spearheads the tumor immunology lab effort. Dr. Eric Wiebke is surgical Director of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Center and Dr. Tom Howard runs the IU Pancreas Research Group. The Minimally Invasive Surgical Program is led by Drs. David Canal, Don Selzer and Attila Nakeeb. Dr. Selzer is also Director of the Center for Advanced Surgical Technology.
Dr. Gerardo Gomez is the Director of the Division of Adult Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. He is assisted by Drs. Lewis Jacobson, Clark Simons, Eric Strieb, Mark Falimirski, and Timothy Hayward. The adult trauma activity on our campus is carried out at the Wishard Memorial Hospital and IU-Wishard Level 1 Trauma Center. Surgical Critical Care activity at IU Hospital is coordinated by Dr. Falimirski. Dr. George Rodman is the Director of the Level 1 trauma system at Methodist Hospital, supported by Dr Scott Bjerke, Timothy Pohlman and the General Surgery teaching faculty. Surgical Critical at Methodist is run by Drs. Pohlman, Rodman and Bjerke. Dr. Larry Micon is head of General Surgery at Methodist Hospital. The General Surgery faculty at Methodist Hospital includes Drs. Richard Graffis, James Crossin, Dale Rouch, Andrew Nigh, Larry Micon, Brian Haag, Margaret Inman, Mary Kay Turner, Larry Stevens, John Ditslear, Kim Kerr and Michael Rowe. Methodist Hospital has a wealth of surgical material that ranges from mundane to tertiary procedures including numerous minimal access surgical cases.
