MAY
Surgery SIG would like to invite everyone applying for a surgery residency, interested in surgery, or just likes free food to come to our informational meeting next Thursday night May 19 at 5 pm in the Emerson hall Auditorium. Dr. Canal, the residency program director at IU, will be leading this meeting which will cover all of your burning questions such as:
1. How can I succeed on my sub-I month?
2. How will the new work hours for interns affect my sub-I?
3. What is the value of visiting electives?
4. What is the value of doing research? Who can I contact if I want to set up a research opportunity?
5. What makes a good personal statement?
6. How should I ask for letters of recommendations? Who should I ask?
7. Who should I talk to if I am interested in urology, plastics, or CV surgery?
8. What else can I do to make myself the best possible candidate for the match?

OCTOBER
-Westside Health Fair. We will have a booth from 9am-1pm on Oct 15 promoting colon cancer screening and prevention. If you would like to join us for part or all of the fair, please email ssig@iupui.edu.

-Pumpkin carving at IUCAT's Pumpkin Carving event. 10/23 at 2pm at Broad Ripple Park. It is "BYOP" - bring your own pumpkin. Surgical tools for carving will be provided courtesy of Dr. Rothenberg.

-St. Vincent's General Surgery Residency informational session with Dr. Nelson, Residency Director. 10/19 @ 6pm at Buffalo Wild Wings.

NOVEMBER
-Interviewing tips for Surgery programs. Drs. Canal, Ladd, and Choi will be there along with interns who just went through this process. Come for some valuable advice on how to have a successful interview. 11/1 @ 6pm in Daly 185. Click here if you missed it and want to see a summary of the advice given.

JANUARY
-Women in Surgery. An informal discussion with female surgeons in various career tracts (academic and private with different subspecialties) about work, life, and everything in between. Date and time TBD.

MARCH
-Match party! Details TBD.

CURRENT IDEAS FOR SPRING SEMESTER
-Surgery skills lab for MS1-3, taught by MS4s
-Surgery SIG day at IUSOC, breast cancer screening and prevention
-Intro to Surgery Subspecialties lecture series/panel discussion
-Fourth year planning advice for rising MS3's with Dr. Canal
