Her outline was barely 2 pages. Her 3 main points are wht is R & B, what is Rap and what is Hip-Hop. I explained that her outline was way too short and that there didn't appear to be nearly enough content to meet the time requirment. She exlained that she had several music audio clips she would be playing and stated she only planned to actually talk for about 2 minutes total and then listen to the music the rest of the time. I strongly urged her to make sure this was OK with her instructor (she said she had not cleared this yet) as it did not really fit what the speech requirements were. I gave her suggestions on how and where to add content and she also had not cited any sources, so I went over how to do that. She seemed to understand, and she was very nice and I know she wants to do well. I am just really worried that she won't do well based on the fact she is letting the audio clips do the work for her. 10/24 10 24 14 15 14 30 Yes COMM R110 class 3505 Angar Chris Explanatory Gretchen Bermuda Triangle Reviewed outline. Discussed best use of evidence to support assertions. Steve, I worked with Bryn last week on this, and she has a ton of information, almost to much. I tried to keep her focussed on just proving her assertions and not adding superfluous info mainly because she doesn't have time in the one point for extra info that does not specifically prove the assertions. It was then that she said they are expected to do a One Point lasting 5-6 minutes. I confirmed this when she let me see her syllabus. I have no idea what is expected of the students to fill all that extra time. Is it just more assertions? I just think it is really important for teachers to make us aware of their expectations when they change the speech requirements from what the book says. We can't effectively help their students if we don't know that. 11/07 11 07 15 30 16 00 Yes COMM R110 class 3470 Osburn Kristen One-Point Gretchen Obesity Reviewed outline. Suggested changes to make speech in compliant with Monroe's. Steve, Hannah came in and said she didn't need help with anything, she just was fulfilling the requirement to visit the lab. She said she didn't really need to work on anything, but maybe someone could just look over her outline. She is giving the speech tonight. I looked over her outline, and while her topic is good and she has some good information, she has 30 power point slides and the body of the speech is not organized properly. She did say some of the slides were blank, but even at half that, 15 slides is too many. As for the body, she had at least 6 or 7 assertions randomly spaced throughout the body. Main Point II (which should begin the solution step) was actually a piece of evidence that was not attached to a particular assertion. The left side columns were not labeled properly making it more difficult for the reader to try to follow Monroe's. There were many pices of evidence that did not support the assertion they were attached to. I explained this all to her, and she then told me her teacher had already graded this and it was fine. She said if there was so much "wrong" with it, then why didn't her teacher tell her that?. She was not at all happy about what I was telling her. I then explained that my job was to show her how to make her speech fit the requirement, and that if a teacher was not following that requirement, then they need to let us know so we know what to tell their students, and in this case, her teacher had not alerted us to anything different. I also told her that if her teacher said it was OK, then she didn't need to worry about what I was saying. I also explained that I was just doing my job and that when she came in claiming to not need help but only to get the credit for being here that she shouldn't be upset if the mentor brings problems to light. (In other words, preparing ahead of time would prevent this from happening). She then burst into tears and was sobbing with her head down. I was stunned and told her not to worry and not to cry and that if her teacher already said it was OK then I was sure it would be fine as it was, but that I could only tell her what the requirements for the speech was. I believe she had no interest in knowing about anything 'wrong' with her speech, she just wanted the credit for being here and never expected there might be issues with her outline. Sorry....I have never had this happen with a student to the point of sobbing like that.
