Instructions for Selecting the Appropriate Forms for a New Study
It
is of the utmost importance that the forms be filled out in a clear
and concise manner, without using jargon or highly technical language.
The initial review will be performed by both technical and non-technical
members of IACUC. In addition, the protocol must be readily comprehensible
by members of outside inspection teams from accrediting agencies,
such as USDA and ALAAC. If English is not your first language and
you have trouble with written communication, you should have a colleague
review and edit your application before submission.

B
“Animals
being bred, conditioned, or held for use in teaching, testing,
experiments, research, or surgery, but not yet used for
such purposes.”
·Studies in which only breeding occurs (parents + offspring) including
animals that will be culled and not used in experiments;
·Wild animals observed in their natural habitat.
C
“Animals
upon which teaching, research, experiments, or tests will
be conducted involving no pain, distress, or use of pain-relieving
drugs.”
·Euthanasia and
tissue procurement from euthanized animals (if euthanasia
method meets recommendations of AVMA Panel);
·Grow tumor in
animal & end study before tumor gets large enough to
make animal sick;
·Routine injections
and adminstration of oral medications;
·Collect bloodfrom
peripheral vein;
·Catheterization
of a peripheral vein;
·Standard Radiography;
·Non-invasive imaging
(PET/MRI) in an anesthetized animal
D
“Animals
upon which experiments, teaching, research, surgery, or
tests will be conducted involving accompanying pain or
distress to the animals and for which appropriate anesthetic,
analgesic, or tranquilizing drugs will be used.”
·Non-survival surgery
performed on anesthetized animals;
·Perfusion or tissue
procurement from anesthetized animas prior to death
·Survival surgery
on anesthetized animals performed by trained personnel +
post-op analgesics are given;
·Blood collection
by orbital sinus puncture or other invasive route that requires
anesthesia for collection;
·Tumor study on
which animal develops cancer, but study ends at a defined
point before the animal begins to experience demise from
the cancer;
·Immunization studies
done using LARC Immunological procedures guidelines;
·Endoscopic surgery;
·Animal is injected
with a chemical, toxin, rDNA or infectious agent, but the
study duration and endpoints prevent significant illness;
·Animal model develops
a genetic disease, but disease progression will be monitored & demise
prevented by appropriate euthanasia;
·Animal will develop
an experimental disease, but progression of disease will
be monitored and animal will be removed from the study prior
to suffering significant ill effects from disease. Studies;
·Usingfood or fluid restriction in which animals do not develop
dehydration.
E
“Animals
upon which teaching, experiments, research, surgery, or
tests will be conducted involving accompanying pain or
distress to the animals and for which the use of appropriate
anesthetic, analgesic, or tranquilizing drugs will adversely
affect the procedures, results or interpretation of the
teach, research, experiments, surgery, or tests.”
·Pain research studies
in which no analgesics are used;
·Studies which have death
of the animal as a data point for any groups (control or
experimental);
·Immunization protocols
using footpad injections;
·Tumor study on which
animal develops cachexia & other physical signs of systemic
cancer;
·Tumor studies using metastatic
cell lines—metastasis is the focus of the study;
·Studies usingfood or fluid
deprivation that will produce dehydration.or produce an altered
physiological or biochemical state in the test subject.
For
Category E studies, the PI must fill out Appendix E.Be advised that this information may be
forwarded to USDA.The
IUSM IACUC requires that a pilot study be conducted
prior to use of death as an experimental data point
