How to report issues

or concerns

What are the requirements to conduct all of the proposed animal research activities in non-IUSM facilities?

If the principal investigator (i.e., IUSM faculty) owns the animals, the following applies.

In order to perform research at contract sites, private businesses or other institutions the performance site must have all of the following:

• An up-to-date, approved Assurance on file with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare.
• An up-to-date, approved registration with the United States Department of Agriculture (if applicable).
• The performance site must have full accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Animal
Care-International (AAALAC-International).
• If the proposed site meets all of these criteria, the principal investigator must supply proof of IACUC review and approval
for the work at that site as well as the PHS Assurance number, the USDA registration number, proof of AAALAC- International accreditation, and state the ownership of the animals.

If the animals are not owned by the principal investigator, or only tissues will be used, the following applies.

If the animals are not owned by the principal investigator or if ONLY tissues are received from commercial suppliers or other investigators, a brief letter explaining the source and need for the tissues will suffice.

If a whole animal, alive or dead, is brought to an IUSM facility solely for the purpose of procuring tissues, a study application is required.
