                       Is Review by Designated Members of the IACUC possible?
New studies and amendments to on-going studies can sometimes be reviewed faster by using designated members of the IACUC. The forms must be complete and not need substantial revision. Additional criteria for designated member review are outlined in the following table.

Amendment to On-Going Study Eligibility Criteria

All of the proposed animal use activities are USDA Category C* for pain & distress. Studies where animals are a different Category will be handled on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the IACUC Chair.

The Application form is already approved by another campus IACUC
(School of Dentistry, School of Science, Roudebush VA, Methodist Research Institute)

The Amendment form is already approved by another campus IACUC

Change the principal investigator, funding source, research site

 

Add a new transgenic or knock-out strain to a study with existing approval to use genetically-manipulated animals

 

Request delayed weaning of rodents

 

Add a new hazardous agent or radio-isotope of the same hazard level as that approved in the original application

 

Make a change to an approved non-survival surgery

 

Modify a survival surgery that is already approved in that species

 

Change a drug dose, add a new drug, or change a non-physical method of euthanasia.

 

Add or change the timeline

 

Add or change in vivo tissue perfusion.


USDA Category C: The procedure involves no pain or distress; thus no pain-relieving drugs are needed. Examples: administration of fluids, oral medication, blood collection or catheterization of a common vein (no anesthesia required), standard radiography, parenteral injection of non-irritating substances, euthanasia using non-physical means by a method approved by the AVMA Panel on Euthanasia; short periods of restraint.
