Six Key Strategic Clusters

The Solution Center focuses on six economic clusters of research and academic importance, as identified by the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership and the Energize Indiana Project, which are essentially important to Central Indiana.


Life Sciences and Health Sciences

IUPUI is a leader in Indiana's life and health sciences, generating employment opportunities within the state at twice the national rate. With programs such as the IHIE and the Regenstrief Institute, and through faculty and students in IU's schools of Informatics, Nursing, Dentistry, Medicine, and Law and Purdue schools of engineering and technology and Science - all on the IUPUI campus - the university has partners with pubic health officials, medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers, and healthcare providers to create a strong environment to advance the life sciences and the health information technology sector.

Advanced Manufacturing

Still an economic driver for the state, this largest sector of Indiana's economy faces real challenges. Its strength and future depends on growth in high-tech manufacturing jobs, updated manufacturing enterprises and greater access to modern technology and research capabilities. Purdue schools of engineering and Technology, Science and IU schools of Business, Informatics, and others provide leadership in advanced manufacturing through research, community service efforts and the training of skilled professionals at IUPUI.

21st Century Logistics

This $1 trillion industry includes issues ranging from supply-chain security and solutions, intermodal transportation, and carrier collaboration to evaluation assets and talent needs. Like the state, this is a growth area for IUPUI and involves faulty and students from IU schools including Business Public and Environmental Affairs, Liberal Arts, and Physical Education and Tourism management and the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology.

Arts, Culture and Tourism

The arts, tourism and entertainment represent growth opportunities for the city with 19 million visitors spending nearly $3 billion each year. As a convention destination, Indianapolis frequently outperforms its peer cities. The faulty and students of IUPUI through Herron School of Art and Design, Liberal Arts, and Physical Education and Tourism Management serve the state as a ready resource of research and expertise to develop an energetic and high visible arts, culture and tourism sector.

Nonprofit Organizations

Philanthropy is much more than contributing to a favorite charity. It's about giving blood, volunteering at a favorite organization, or helping a neighbor in need. IUPUI boasts the nation's largest and best-known center for philanthropic research. Faculty and students from IU schools ranging from Liberal Arts, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Social Work to Business and Law create the infrastructure and pipeline of talent available at IUPUI.

Information & Communication technology

Among the many definitions for high-tech, the most useful focuses on embeddedness, the idea that technology is an increasingly integral part of many industries. The need for experts in this field transverses sectors: business, industry, nonprofits, and government agencies. IUPUI faculty, students, and graduates from seven schools including IU schools of Informatics, Business and Purdue schools of Engineering and Technology and Science are highly skilled and trained in information technologies, with no fewer than seven schools contributing to the pipeline of talent.
