Letters to Instructors
There may be times when a student with a disability feels unable to discuss their needs with professors or other university staff. Even though the student knows what type of help is needed from professors, communicating that need may be difficult for one reason or another. For students who request it, AES can communicate with professors and instructors on behalf of the student.
Getting Accommodations: A Step-by-Step Guide
Don’t wait until it's too late to get accommodations. It's important that you complete the testing accommodations process with our office, as soon as the semester begins!
Interpreters
AES employs several full-time highly-skilled interpreters to help students during classes, provide interpreting at campus events, and to provide interpreting services for students who need to attend to school-related affairs.
Notetakers
There are several reasons why a student might need a notetaker. Students with certain mobility impairments, for example, may have trouble physically writing. The student with a learning disability may struggle with organizing the professor's lecture information. Notetakers enable these students the same advantages as other students in their classes.
Readers
There are several reasons why a student might need a reader. For example, students with learning disabilities, visual impairments or some forms of neurological diseases or disorders might need readers. Readers enable these students the same advantages as others in their classes.
Testing
There are several reasons why a student might need testing accommodations. Students with mobility impairments, for example, may have trouble writing and need more time on exams. Or, if you have a learning disability in reading, extra time on exams may mean the difference between simply guessing at answers or really understanding what each question is asking.
Tutoring
Adaptive Educational Services (AES) does not provide tutors for students. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), tutoring is considered a "personal service" and is not required of a disability-service office. However, we will help students find tutors by referring you to the Bepko Learning Center or even assisting in communicating your need for tutor with a sponsoring agency (e.g. Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation).
