In addition to being a part-time graduate student, I currently work for the Indiana Secretary of State's Office in the Investor Education Program (Indiana Investment Watch), which raises awareness across Indiana about fraud and financial literacy through both grassroots outreach and major media campaigns.  I hope to use the combined skills from this job and my sociology background to pursue work in the social service or non-profit area.   I am also considering further degree work once my MA is finished.  I am interested in social justice, particularly as it relates to religion, which is the focus of my thesis.   I am also interested in political sociology, economic sociology, race/gender issues, social change, and social theory. Areas of Interest: Social Psychology, Family/Gender, Youth Studies /
I am currently focusing my research on family and gender with an emphasis on sexuality and identity.  During my undergraduate career I was interested in studying the Goth sub-culture, but have shifted that focus towards club culture.  While the two may seem vastly different areas of interest they are very closely related.  I am primarily interested in how one develops a sense of self, and what steps actors take towards legitimizing their identity. Minor in Sociology
Areas of Interest: gender and family, sociology of sexuality /
I am undecided at the moment in terms of what I would like to do when done with school.  My interests, as stated above, are gender and family as well as sexuality.  Whatever I do I would love to be able to focus on those three topics and how they intersect and are affected by each other.  At the moment I work at a residential eating disorder clinic as a counselor and I have worked there since graduating this past summer.

RicheyAmanda Richey, B.A. Sociology (Indiana University)
Areas of Interest: familyand gender studies, applied sociology /
My interest in family studies comes from years of experience working with impoverished and disadvantaged families.  In the future I would like to use my degree and experience working within a family preservation program.  I have a special interest in the preservation of families with disabilities - parents who are low-functioning, mentally ill, etc.  There are not a lot of resources for adults in these categories striving to keep their families intact.  There is not a lot of sympathy or understanding for them either.  I'd like to be a part of changing that.

Areas of Interest:  work and organizations /
I'm pursuing the work/organizations track in Sociology. My thesis will involve original qualitative research exploring low literacy among adults whose primary language is English. One of my main motivations for this work is to debunk negative stereotypes surrounding adults with low literacy. I plan to incorporate MI theory into this research.  I also plan to teach in the future. Right now, I'm also completing coursework for the T2T program in the School of Education. I will begin graduate work there in 2008. Expected Graduation Date for M.A. in Sociology: 2008
