Susanmarie Harrington's Home Page

A few aspects of my professional work:

• I teach a variety of courses in writing and English language at Indiana University- Purdue University, Indianapolis (which understandably has a shorter informal name: IUPUI ). I am the Director of Writing in the Department of English.
• In 1999, I was visiting professor and Associate Director of Composition in the English department at Texas Tech University. It was a great experience, and one of the courses I taught was a special topics seminar on Contemporary Issues in Writing Assessment.
• One important professional organization is the Council of Writing Program Administrators (WPA).
• I did my graduate work at the University of Michigan, and my undergraduate work at Dartmouth College . My first full-time academic job was at the University of Michigan's English Composition Board, which is now defunct (replaced by the Sweetland Writing Center).

Some people whose work I find helpful

The collaboration in the field of rhetoric and composition is exciting and inspiring. My participation in several electronic discussion lists, rhetnt-l (associated with the online journal Rhetnet, acw-l (associated to one degree or another with The Alliance for Computers and Writing, has shaped my approach to teaching enormously. You can see some of the work I did at Texas Tech reflected in the home page of a virtual colleague, Becky Rickly. We developed a mentoring program together. Becky is just one person who's helped me realize the possibilities involved in teaching with computers. Tere Hogue, who coordinates the IUPUI University Writing Center, has been one of my local companions here as I've explored the WWW. And Helen Schwartz has been an inspiration in all sorts of ways.
