Private Sector Scholarship Searching

Scholarships come from many sources in the private sector such as businesses, civic, community and religious organizations. Scholarship opportunities are becoming more prevalent each year, but it’s your responsibility to do the research to find them. Remember, you won’t be considered for a scholarship if you don’t apply. Persistence in this arena literally pays off for most students!

How to inquire about Scholarship Opportunities

Check out the up-to-date, FREE Internet scholarship searching databases like FastWeb, Collegeboard and WiredScholar. Do at least 2 searches in each database to maximize your results. The internet has become a great tool for identifying scholarshipopportunities.

Financial Aid

Students who wish to apply for financial assistance for college should fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) ideally before the March 1st deadline to be given priority consideration for state and university assistance. Please consult the IUPUI Financial Aid website for details on financial aid. IUPUI administers federal and state aid in the form of Pell grants, student loans and state-based grant programs.

America Reads/America Counts

Making a difference in the lives of others can be a satisfying way to pay your way through college. Beginning at $9.00 an hour, you tutor elementary school children in literacy enrichment or elementary-high school students in math enrichment. Bilingual tutors are also needed. Non Work-Study — Student Employment Opportunities

Many departments throughout campus also hire students who are not eligible for workstudy. There are numerous benefits to working on campus and most employers allow for flexible work hours that are built around your class schedule. Work-Study

Federal Work-Study is one of the best-kept secrets around! Federal Work-Study is a great job opportunity to help you support yourself while gaining work experience in college. Advantages of this program include flexible work schedules built around your class schedule, work on campus or in the community, earnings exempt from Social Security taxes, the availability of many jobs in apprentice career fields, the advantage of work-study income not being reportable on next year’s FAFSA form, and the positive statistics that work-study students have higher GPA’s in general than other students. Working at the university or in the community and getting a paycheck every two weeks, helps you pay as you go to school. Eligibility is determined by submitting the FAFSA. Military Scholarships

Army ROTC Scholarships

Tuition and Fees

Four-, three-, and two- year Army ROTC Scholarships will pay for full college tuition and fees. In addition, a grant for textbooks and a $1,500 general subsistence allowance are added for each school year the scholarship is in effect. Four-year ROTC scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to U.S. citizens who will enter college as freshmen. Applications postmarked by July 15, one year prior to starting college, are considered for early-cycle scholarships, with winners announced by Nov. 1. Applications postmarked after July 15, but no later than Dec. 1, are considered in the regular cycle, with winners announced by March 1. There is no military commitment until the start of the sophomore year. There are also two-year reserve forces duty scholarships offered at IUPUI. Navy Officer Scholarships

Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP): This program provides full tuition and fees, as well as a living stipend of $1279 a month. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA, for dental students a DAT score of at least 18 or for medical students an MCAT of 22, provide favorable references and be a U.S. citizen.

Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP): Students in this program receive a minimum monthly allowance of $2500, as well as full medical and dental benefits. Students in this program can be promoted and receive pay increases. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA, rank in the top half of their high school class, provide favorable references and be a U.S. citizen.

The Dental Student Program: This program offers a $30,000 signing bonus upon completion of dental school and starting practice in the Navy as a Dental Officer. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA, provide favorable references and be a U.S. citizen.

Nurse Candidate Program: This program offers a $10,000 signing bonus upon completion of nursing school and up to $34,000 in scholarships. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA, provide favorable references and be a U.S. citizen.

Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program: Earn up to $60,000 while in college and receive medical/dental coverage. College applies toward active duty retirement. Air Force ROTC Scholarships

Air Force ROTC offers a variety of ways to get the money you need for school while requiring only minimal time from you as a student. But the benefits extend well beyond graduation – starting with a career as an officer in the Air Force straight out of school. Over 150 career fields are available. The Air Force currently has a high need for engineers and nurses. Air Force ROTC scholarships cover tuition, an annual textbook allowance, most lab fees and $250-$400 spending cash per academic month. The application deadline for high school students is December 1st of your senior year. There is no military commitment until the start of the sophomore year. Scholarships are also available for students currently in college. Beyond that, the benefits of Air Force ROTC are priceless:

• Take part in experiences that you’ll remember for a lifetime.
• Grow as an individual and gain a sense of belonging with a group of peers who share common interests.
• Visit Air Force bases in the United States and overseas (and get paid for it).
• Take part in extreme Air Force summer adventures.
• Get college credit for Air Force ROTC courses.
• Air Force ROTC is an excellent way to complement your college lifestyle without dominating it. You’ll still have time for a job, to join a sorority/fraternity, or join other social clubs.
