IUPUI Sailing

IUPUI Sailing was established at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in March of 2000. Our goals are simple; sail fast, live slow, eat, drink, and be merry. IUPUI Sailing Team members are encouraged to race at local, regional, and national levels. Frequent travel and pleasure cruising are also common with IUPUI Sailing. Through our sailing program we hope to instill the enthusiasm, teamwork and camaraderie shared by sailors everywhere. IUPUI Sailing is comprised of two programs; Intercollegiate Racing and Offshore Racing on Lake Michigan. Our programs are open to any IUPUI undergraduate student with an interest in sailing. IUPUI Sailing Team members will have the opportunity to crew on many different types of boats from dinghies to offshore racing yachts. If you are interested in joining our team, download our online Team Application & Membership Packet. Please email your completed Team Application to sail@iupui.edu or alternatively mail it to us at the address below.

Intercollegiate Racing

IUPUI Sailing is a member of the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association (MCSA). We compete regularly with other college in the Midwest such as Michigan, Northwestern, and Notre Dame. There are approximately twenty-five different colleges and universities in the Midwest belong to the MCSA. These schools claim over 3000 individual members and own over 325 boats. Geographically, the MCSA ranges from western Pennsylvania to between Missouri and Minnesota and from Kentucky north into Canada.

Member clubs provide a wide variety of sailing opportunities, including double-handed dinghy, single-handed dinghy, team racing, intermediate sloop, and offshore competition. Since most clubs have members of various experience levels, they offer lessons, recreational sailing and racing opportunities.

Offshore Racing

IUPUI Sailing Club members also have the opportunity to participate inoffshore yacht racing on the Great Lakes, and even on the East Coast.   During the offshore racingseason, IUPUI Sailing Club members frequently crew on boats out of Chicago Yacht Club and Columbia Yacht Club, ranging from Tartan 10's and Mumm 30's up to  Shock 40's and50 footers.

The four main IUPUI Sailing offshore events ofthe summer are theNational Offshore One-Design, Chicagoto Mackinac Race, the VerveCup, and Tri-StateRegatta. In addition to these four main regattas, IUPUI Sailors often venture up to various ports on the Great Lakes for events such as the J/35Levels, Cleveland Race Week, and the Leukemia Cup. IUPUI Sailing Members haveeven competed in high-profile international events such as Key West Race Weekand SORC - Miami.

Offshore racing is one of themany aspects that separates IUPUI Sailing from other Midwest collegiate sailingclubs and allows its members a more diverse sailing program.

Home Waters

IUPUI Sailing members enjoy sailing at Eagle Creek Sailing Club on EagleCreek Reservoir inIndianapolis, Indiana. ECSC has a number of very active One-Design and PHRF fleets and is one of the most active sail clubs in the Midwest. Club Races are held every Wednesday night during the spring and fall season and every Sunday at noon. We are fortunate to have the use of their facilities, equipment, and knowledge. Boats available to IUPUI Sailing include Lasers, Finns, FJ's, J/22's, and J/24's.

Boat and Financial Donations

One way of realizing top value for your boat is to donate it to a tax-exempt institution or organization. In some cases, it can be economically advantageous to receive an income tax deduction rather than to sell a boat outright. In addition, by donating your boat to IUPUI Sailing, you benefit from knowing that you are helping to support an active youth sailing program. For many boat owners, giving their boat to a training program enabling many students to experience the joys of sailing is preferable to selling to an individual. Because IUPUI Sailing has a full tax-exempt status as defined in section 501C (3) of the IRS code, donations of boats and financial donations to the team are eligible to be used as an income tax deduction.
