Trip to Twinrocker Paper

May 5, 2004

Met at the site at 10:30 am, directions below. Located at 100 East Third Street Brookston, IN 47823.

Kathryn and Howard Clark originally established Twinrocker Paper Studio in 1971 in San Francisco. They moved their studio back to Indiana several years ago when they outgrew their space. They have developed fine handmade papers and encouraged the art world to appreciate the aesthetic importance of paper. They have provided paper for some of the giants of contemporary art, and have created paper for limited edition prints and books for publishers such as the Whitney Museum and Alfred Knopf. For more information about Twinrocker see their website at www.twinrocker.com.

We had a tour of the paper studio and a lecture on the history and practice of this ancient craft, paper chemistry, artistic techniques, watermarks and examples of finished paper pulp artwork and handmade limited edition books.

This took 1 1/2 to 2 hours and cost $10 per person.

Brookston is a tiny town with one stoplight. From I 65 take exit 178 (Lafayette) Route 43 north. This will take you to Brookston (5 miles). Turn right at the stoplight (State Road 18) and go over the RR track. Twinrocker is just east of the RR track on the north side of the street. There are four trees in front of the studio. Travel time is 1 hour and 39 minutes from downtown Indianapolis (73.4 miles).

Lunch was at one of the three restaurants close by. They are all on Third Street within walking distance. They are Kleinbrot Haus which is a bakery restaurant and two bars which serve food, the Corner Pub and Top Notch Bar.
