Call to order
President Bill Voos called the meeting to order at 10:15 A.M.
Approval of minutes
The minutes of the February 12 meeting were approved with corrections.
Treasurer’s report
Treasurer Shirley Newhouse presented her report. She noted that
market losses since July 1, 2008, have reduced each of the Senior
Academy accounts. As of February 28, the balances in SA scholarship
funds are: $32,430 (Returning Students), 29,219 (IPS Students),
and $33,329 (Academic Scholarships). In addition, SA has $5,372
in its Foundation fund and $4,589 in the checking account.
Shirley asked for the board’s opinion about whether, in light
of market weakness, we should continue to award $2,000 scholarships,
and the Board unanimously agreed to continue the scholarship awards
at $2,000. The Treasurer’s report was accepted.
Program Committee report
President Bill Voos congratulated Chair Carlyn Johnson on the superb
choice of topics as demonstrated by large attendance at recent programs.
Several members of the Board enthusiastically agreed.
• Carlyn announced that in his March 17 presentation, Gene
Tempel will discuss how the IU Foundation is managing funds in the
current difficult economic climate.
• Carlyn briefly talked about a suggested program for next
fall which would be co-sponsored by the Program and Social Committees:
an illustrated presentation of the campus master plan and a shuttle
bus-walking tour of the campus to introduce SA members to the many
changes, new buildings, and facilities on the IUPUI campus.
• Carlyn asked for the Board’s opinions about other
possible programs, one on pain management and the other on employment
expectations of new college graduates.
Social Committee report
Mary Grove reported for the Social Committee.
• About a dozen SA members attended the IUPUI-Oakland University
basketball game on Saturday, February 21, with dinner prior to the
game. Giles and Dolores Hoyt were in charge of the event.
• The Social Committee is assisting the IUPUI Foundation with
a Scholarship Recognition reception honoring Art and Patricia Mirsky
to be held Thursday, April 9, 4:30-6:00 P.M. People who made donations
to the Senior Academy Scholarships for IPS students, returning students,
and academic scholarships will be invited.
• A wildflower video program and guided walk to be held at
Holliday Park at 10:00 A.M., on Friday, April 17, with optional
lunch at MCL cafeteria following the walk. Ursula Roberts is planning
the event.
• The May social program is pending.
Last Lecture Committee report
Chair Golam Mannan reported that Dr. Robert M. Einterz, Professor
of Clinical Medicine and Associate Dean for International Affairs
at the IU School of Medicine, was selected to give IUPUI’s
inaugural Last Lecture on Friday, April 17, at 3:00 P.M. in the
Conference Center Auditorium. Dr. Einterz has taught at IU School
of Medicine since 1985. His hospital appointments include IU Hospital,
Wishard Hospital, Roudebush Veterans Hospital, and Eldoret District
Hospital in Kenya. He also taught at Moi University in Kenya. He
was selected from a field of 20 distinguished nominees. The Senior
Academy will present Dr. Einterz with the Bepko Medallion, and,
with the Foundation, will also present an honorarium. Following
the Last Lecture, there will be a light reception followed by the
Chancellor’s Honors Convocation, which will begin at 5:00
P.M.
Suzanne Vick, representing the IUPUI Office of
Communications and Marketing, reported an invitation is being designed
to invite people to both events, which will also be connected with
IUPUI’s 40th Anniversary celebration. The Communications-Marketing
office will also promote Last Lecture through Inside IUPUI, on-campus
TV screens, the 40th Anniversary website, and a news release with
profile and photograph of Dr. Einterz. Their staff will make a transcript
and CD and DVD of the Last Lecture.
Suzanne also invited Senior Academy members to a 40th Anniversary
concert to be held
September 11 at the Walker Theater. The featured performer is Angela
Brown, an Indianapolis native and IU School of Music graduate, who
has performed with the Metropolitan Opera and internationally.
Communications Committee report
Walt Linne reported that he is working with Steve Hodges of the
IUPUI Communications and Marketing office to update the SA website
consistent with the IUPUI format. The new look will have categories/links
in the left column and streamlined sub-categories. It will display
membership news, officers and committees, a programs and events
listing, minutes of Board meetings, The Sentinel, and a Contact
link. June 1 is the target date for the new SA website.
Policies
Bill Voos distributed Guidelines for Cooperating with Other Organizations,
which the Board approved. Members of the Board discussed whether
the Last Lecture Committee and the Research Committee should become
standing committees, rather than ad-hoc committees. No vote was
taken.
