Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the November 13, 2008, meeting were approved.

President’s Report
Bill Voos commented on the fun and fellowship at the December 10 Holiday Dinner, which was planned by Bernice Hopp. He announced that, after successful physical therapy, Dottie Swinney will be released from the Rehabilitation Hospital and spend some time recuperating at her daughter’s home.

Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer Shirley Newhouse presented treasurer’s reports for the months of October and November. All accounts remain solvent, but due to the crisis in the stock market, the change in market value in the Scholarship funds for IPS Students, Returning Students, and Academic Achievement resulted in a loss of $29,438 during this fiscal year. However, during this fiscal year, contributions to the scholarship funds were $52,575. The Treasurer’s report was approved.

Communications Committee Report
Chair Walt Linne reported that the committee will start work on the SA website in January, along with campus webmaster Scott Chevalier. Walt wants to do a full audit of the membership list to assure its accuracy. Mark Grove commented that the campus is striving to make all IUPUI websites consistent, and Scott is very busy with that effort. Bill Voos advised the committee to try to assure that the website is uncomplicated enough for people using a modem.
Dick Patterson asked Walt to review the forms of communications that Senior Academy uses. Walt and Noel Duerden listed these: Distribution List, Sentinel Newsletter, Website, Mailings from Dottie Swinney, and a Shared Information listserve in which members can ask questions on-line and get replies from interested members.

Program Committee Report
Chair Carlyn Johnson announced that January’s program will be on Memory Loss with a speaker from the IU Medical Center. Carlyn has reserved the meeting room at the Glendale Library for the second Tuesday of the month through May. Another program in the works is a slide presentation by Ron Frank on his travels in Eastern Europe. Carlyn also mentioned other possible topics: a talk by Tom DeCoster on Employment Issues and Expectations by the new generation of college graduates and a talk on regeneration of skin tissue by David Stocum. Bill Voos suggested that SA members may be interested in viewing a film noir movie and discussion by a faculty member who teaches a course on film noir. Golam Mannan recommended a talk based on a book titled “I’m Going Out of My Mind” by an author who experienced early-onset Alzheimer’s and recorded his experience. Members commented on the excellent turnout and question-answer participation for the Morton Marcus talk on the Economy.

Last Lecture Committee
Golam Mannan reported that the letters and criteria have gone out seeking nominees for the Last Lecture series; nominations are due February 1, 2009. The section committee will be chosen after the nomination deadline. Bill Voos said that he was contacted by Journalism Dean Jim Brown, who said his students would be interested in writing about the Last Lecture selection process. Golam and Bill will meet with Jim and students on January 5. The board agreed that Jim’s students have always performed well, and a journalistic story would give extra notoriety to the IUPUI Last Lecture speaker and series. The Last Lecture will take place on April 17, 2009, preceding the Chancellors’ Honors Convocation.

Social Committee
Chair Jean Gnat reported:
• The February social event will be an SA get-together for an IUPUI basketball game (date TBA), chaired by Giles and Dolores Hoyt. Giles said there may also be a light supper prior to the game. Board members agreed that the event will be a good way to show our support for the university and team, while attending an exciting game.
• April 17, 2009, 10:00 A.M. Spring Wild Flower Video and Guided Walk in Holliday Park followed by lunch at MCL Cafeteria.
• Also in April, the committee is working with the IU Foundation to hold a reception to honor SA scholarship contributors, with special recognition of Art and Patricia Mirsky.
• A possible activity in May is a trip to a Glass Blowing Studio in Kokomo.
Jean urged new people to join the Social Committee. She said that planning an event is not very difficult, and enthusiastic attendance has proven that social activities are an important contribution to SA fellowship.

Old Business
The board had a lengthy discussion of Senior Academy Executive Committee Goals for 2009, and members suggested that a Membership category and timelines should be added to the document. Dick Patterson moved and Leon Rand seconded a motion that the board should accept the goals document with the suggested changes. The motion was approved.

Dick Patterson offered to chair a committee to draft a survey to assess member interests and encourage participation in Senior Academy. Giles Hoyt, Golam Mannan, Walt Linne, and Mark Grove volunteered to be committee members.

Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 AM.

Respectfully submitted by
Mary Grove, Secretary
Next Board Meeting: January 8, 2009, 10:00 A.M., at Glendale Library
