BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
DECEMBER 13, 2007
GLENDALE LIBRARY AUDITORIUM

 

BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Margaret Applegate, Ted Cutshall, Noel Duerden, jim East, Mark Grove, Mary Grove, Joseph Hingtgen, Bernice Hopp, Jordan Leibman, Don Schultheis, Bill Voos and Harriet Wilkins.

CALL to ORDER: The meeting was called to order by President Jim East at 10:10 A.M.

APPROVAL of MINUTES: The motion to approve the Minutes of the November 8, 2007, meeting was made. Mark Grove corrected the statement regarding sending e-mails. They will not be sent to Faculty members. The motion was then seconded and passed unanimously. The minutes will be filed as approved.

PRESIDENT’s REPORT:

1. Jim complimented the Holiday Dinner held at the Hollyhock Restaurant.

2. Jim East accessed the Shared Information Program. He received 25-30 responses to his appeal for information on moving from one’s home into a group living facility. It is easy to access: sa-share-info-l@iupui.edu.

3. Noel and Jim are working to get Senior Academy notes moved to the IUPUI Archives. Ron Frank has lost 2 volumes of pictures. Ron is organizing pictures which an archivist will store on the computer. Mark suggested Bill Plater’s office as a recommended location for storage of Senior Academy history and pictures. History pages and photos for storage could be submitted yearly. Possibly a board member could become a historian. The archivist is impressed with the IUPUI Senior Academy website. Mark reported that Judy Silence, Webmaster, has added links to the Faculty Club.

4. Mailbox: A man wrote regarding his status as the widower of his deceased wife who was a member in the Senior Academy. He expressed interest in continuing membership for himself. The motion was made to offer him Honorary Membership with a fee. It was moved, seconded and passed unanimously. This was the second case. It was moved to handle each case individually. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

5. Jordan Leibman has requested that he be replaced. Jim will seek a Chairman. Possibly Bob Kirk or Marv Ebbert might be interested.

June 5, 2008 ANNUAL MEETING in STUDENT CENTER. 4:00 P.M.
It was suggested a program be scheduled on the topic of hearing aids. Marge Applegate will investigate sources in the Audiology Clinic on campus. Questions may be written or e-mailed for discussion following the program. Possibly the program will be scheduled in April.

Pictures of Presidents of the Senior Academy, to be taken on January 10, 2008 at 11:30 A.M., will compiled on a CD and sent to the archivist. Presidents include Marshall Yovits, Mary Jane Koch, Marv Ebbert, Carlyn Johnson, Jean Gnat, Ursula Roberts, Don Schultheis and Jim East.

TREASURER’s REPORT:
Don Schultheis, Treasurer, reported. He circulated his printed report. He recommended using funds in the University Account for the Student Center.

STANDING COMMITTEES

COMMUNICATION. Noel Duerden, member, reported. The website will undergo revision in January, 2008. The new brochure for IUPUI Senior Academy will be printed in January, 2008. There will be an edition of the SENIOR SENTINEL in January, 2008. The Shared Information Program is readily available. It could assist the Volunteer Committee.

MEMBERSHIP. Harriet Wilkins, Chairman, reported. Human Resources has scheduled the IUPUI Retirement Program for Friday, March 28, 2008. Therese Martin, Human Resources Director chairs the annual event. The new brochure will be available for distribution. Senior Academy members will serve as panel members and staff the booth.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE. Mary Grove, member, reported. A date for the Senior Academy to tour the new Library will be announced. Mary presented a very detailed program for the Senior Academy Spring Mill State Park Event scheduled Wed-Thurs, May 14-15, 2008.

AD HOC COMMITTEE REPORT

CAMPUS CENTER ROOM DESIGN PLANNING COMMITTEE-Bill Voos, Chairman, reported.
A dedication reception and tour will be scheduled for donors who have contributed to the Campus Center for a room that will be named for the IUPUI Senior Academy. Contributors to the Scholarship Fund will be included. At the Annual Meeting all members will be invited to tour the Student Center.
The Design Committee has toured the Student Center and visited the the Senior Academy room.
The theme for the room has been discussed. Julie Bonhan, Interior Designer, has been contacted. Space is limited due to size of room. It was suggested rotating exhibits. Jim recommends contacting Julie in writing requesting assistance and information in planning the room.
Bill circulated copies of the Committee Report.

ADJOURNMENT.
It was moved, seconded and unanimous to adjourn the meeting at 11:45 A.M.
