Senior Academy Spring Trip to New Harmony Indiana

The Senior Academy spring outing will be at New Harmony Indiana from May 1 to 3, 2013. We will stay at the New Harmony Inn on Wednesday and Thursday nights, May 1 and 2, and return to Indianapolis on Friday May 3.

New Harmony Indiana is one of the most interesting and historic towns in Indiana. It is the site of two of America’s foremost utopian communities of the early 1800s: the Harmonie on the Wabash under the leadership of Johann Georg Rapp followed by the Harmony Society under the leadership of Robert Owen. New Harmony was a center for education and scientific research. Many buildings along the Wabash River have been restored to form the New Harmony Historic District which is a National Historic Landmark. The Indiana State Museum preserves several of the historic buildings, the University of Southern Indiana provides cultural and educational programs and Richard Meier designed the attractive, modern visitor’s center for New Harmony. The New Harmony Inn provides excellent accommodations with furnishings in the Shaker-modest style and the Red Geranium restaurant is well known for excellent food. The Paul Tillich Park and Roofless Church commemorate this well-known theologian. A visit in spring, early May, will be great.

The address for the New Harmony Inn is 504 North Street, New Harmony, Indiana 47631. Their Web site is http://www.newharmonyinn.com/ . MapQuest indicates that it is a bit over 200 miles from Indianapolis taking about 3h and 45 min via I-70, US-41, I-64 and IN-69. Given the travel time, sharing rides will be a good idea.

Ten rooms are reserved under a group called “IUPUI Seniors.” Please secure your own reservation by calling 1-800-7828605 and select #2 (room reservations). You will be connected to the front desk. Tell them that you wish to make a reservation for May 1 and 2 with the “IUPUI Seniors” group. They will collect information on your name, address, phone, and email. You must secure one night’s room reservation with a credit card. A standard room (one queen bed) is $105 per night plus tax and a deluxe room (two twin beds) is $120 per night plus tax. Our block of rooms and the group rate will be offered until April 1, 2013, so please make your reservation before this date.

Please stay tuned for planned group events/tours for May 1 and 2. Historic New Harmony Web sites are found at http://www.usi.edu/hnh/tours.php and http://maxkade.iupui.edu/newharmony/home.html .

Please note that New Harmony is on Central time.

March 2013
Dear IUPUI Senior Academy Member:
With the changing of the clock to daylight savings time and the emergence of daffodils and tulips from their slumber, harbingers of Spring are everywhere. For the IUPUI Senior Academy, this means that it is time to begin the process of electing some new members to the SA board. Like most organizations, the Senior Academy solicits nominations from the membership, and then the SA Nominating Committee prepares a slate of candidates for election by the entire membership of the Senior Academy.
As a member of the IUPUI Senior Academy, will you please nominate someone for the SA Board? You are encouraged to carefully consider offering your own name as a candidate for Board membership. Please submit names and email addresses for nominees by April 5th.

Board Term: This year, we will elect six members for a two-year term on the Board.
Members elected to the SA Board in May will begin their two-year term of service in July.

Responsibilities of SA board members include attendance at monthly board meetings which are held on the second Thursday of each month at 10 am. Board members also need to be actively involved in planning programs for SA members, developing initiatives which permit retired IUPUI staff and faculty to remain engaged with the campus and community, and advancing the opportunities for the Senior Academy to maintain a strong connection with IUPUI and contribute to the enhancement of all facets of IUPUI.
The SA Nominations Committee is responsible for this election process. If you would like to learn more about serving on the Senior Academy Board of Directors, please contact any of the Nominations Committee members.
Current members of the SA Nominations Committee include:
Name email address
Bill Bosron wbosron@iupui.edu

Senior Academy: Annual Meeting

May 31, 2012

Athenaeum, Indianapolis, Indiana

Minutes of the Meeting

Present: There were approximately 40 members of the Senior Academy present.

Call to order: President Bill Bosron called the meeting to order at 2:30 pm and welcomed all present to the meeting. He expressed special thanks to the Max Kade Institute and the Athenaeum for use of the meeting room and to Giles Hoyt for expediting this opportunity.

President Bosron highlighted some of the Senior Academy events and successes of the year:

Dottie Swinney , our valiant and ever efficient and resourceful right hand, retired this year. Harriet Wilkins et al planned and delivered a wonderful event in tribute to Dottie.

Lee McLaughlin has graciously agreed to be our new secretary. Sue Herrell was very helpful in recruiting Lee. Welcome Lee.

President Bosron thanked all of the committee chairs for their fine work over the course of the year and especially noted the hard work and very positive results achieved by Carlyn Johnson (Program Committee) and Golam Mannan (Last Lecture Committee). We were able to present multiple excellent programs and social events (eleven) this year and the Last Lecture was outstanding.

President Bosron noted that the annual reports of all standing committees are contained in the packets available at the registration table for those who are interested. Through the reports all can see the excellent work of the committees.

Thanks were extended to IUPUI Administration and especially Dean Uday Sukhatme for their consistent support of the Senior Academy.

Administrative Greetings: Executive Vice President IU and Chancellor of IUPUI, Charles R. Bantz brought greetings from IUPUI Administration and updated the assembly on a sample of current IUPUI activities:

One of the Super Bowl teams stayed on the IUPUI campus and provided not only some excitement on campus, but also some very positive media coverage for IUPUI

The Tourism & Management students of IUPUI worked with Chase Bank on the very successful East Side Legacy Project which was a positive example of campus/community collaboration.

Our John Herron School of Art and Design completed some very impressive murals for the Super Bowl.

IUPUI was ranked #3 in the nation among “Up- and-Coming National Universities” by U.S. News and World Report.

IUPUI Motor Sports students conducted several very successful programs this year that again exemplified IUPUI/Community collaboration goals.

A remarkable 13 year old IUPUI student of math and science (Jake Barnett) was highlighted on 60 Minutes in a fitting tribute to his accomplishments.

The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute and Research Center have been dedicated and are in operation.

Don Gummer (an Indiana artist) has installed an 18 foot stainless steel and colored glass sculpture titled “Open Eyes” at the Glick Eye Institute. It is Mr. Gummer’s second sculpture installed on campus. The first is “South Tower” on the east side of Eskenazi Hall.

The IUPUI leg of the Cultural Trail has been completed.

The theater in the Student Center has been completed and will seat 250.

The new Science and Engineering Building is under way

The Neuroscience building ground breaking ceremony will occur shortly. (that building will be on the north side of Indianapolis)

The IU School of Law in Indianapolis has been named the Robert McKinney School of Law in recognition of the generous gift to the School of Law from Mr. McKinney.

The School of Public Health has been approved and will be named soon (Fairbanks School of Public Health)

IUPUI is about to establish a School of Philanthropy.

Nasser Paydar from IU East has assumed the position of Executive Vice Chancellor and Academic Dean of Faculties at IUPUI.

Strategic planning for the next 20 years at IUPUI is in process and ideas and visions are welcome. A sample of ideas/goals being considered and/or in process at this point include:

Increase the number of student housing beds by 500. This goal is moving forward.

An Administration Building proposal is moving forward.

Increase the graduation rate at IUPUI. We have made some fine progress, but seek to do even better.

The downtown area of Indianapolis is growing and coming alive with activities and opportunities. IUPUI will continue to contribute to this process and will collaborate to continue and enrich opportunities for IUPUI/community joint activities and projects.

Scholarship Winners:

President Bosron announced that the winners of the Senior Academy scholarships for 2012 are:

IPS Scholarship: Tyler McNeal

Returning Student Scholarship: Devon Dikes

Academic Scholarship: Chassity Mahaska

Unfortunately, none of the winners were able to be with us today.

Board Members for 2012-2013:

President Bosron introduced and welcomed both returning and newly elected Senior Academy Board Members. They are:

Returning Board members: Newly elected Board Members:

Patricia Blake (Nursing) Nan Bohan (Philanthropy)

Bill Bosron (Medicine) Golam Mannan (Education)

Walter Linne (UITS) John Paulsrud (Medicine)

Art Mirsky (Science) Sharon Peterman (Liberal Arts)

                                                                                Randy Strate (Medicine)

                                                                                Harriet Wilkins (Engineering & Technology)

President Bosron also recognized and thanked those Board members who have completed their terms in office and are retiring from the Board:

Giles Hoyt, Mary Grove, Margaret Applegate, Leon Rand, Shirley Newhouse and Nick Kellum.

Program:

Rita T. Kohn, an Indiana Author, presented a program on “True Brew: a guide to craft beer in Indiana”.

Ms. Kohn is a senior writer for “NUVO Newsweekly – Beer Buzz”. She also was the senior editor of “Always a People: Oral Histories of Contemporary Woodland Indians” (IUP 1997), and Editor of “Long Journey Home: Oral Histories of Contemporary Delaware Indians” (IUP 2007).

Her presentation was both informative and entertaining. She not only shared the origins of beer – more ancient than many realized, but shared Indiana’s rich history in the brewing of beer. She provided interesting stories about the social history of brew masters both throughout history and in Indiana in the pursuit of handcrafted beers. The brewing of handcrafted beers has benefitted Indiana historically, culturally, socially, and economically – which she illustrated with her stories. She details this history in her book: “True Brew” (2007). She brought copies of her book for the review of the assembly.

Adjournment:

The meeting was adjourned and the assembly was invited to enjoy special Athenaeum hors d’oeuvres, soft drinks, coffee, and a hand crafted brew from Indiana.

A tour of the Athenaeum with Giles Hoyt is available to all interested parties.

Respectfully submitted,

Margaret Applegate, Secretary

Carolyn Lausch, retired educator will offer interested participants time to try a brief activity from her class series for older adults, I’ve a Story To Tell. Dr. David Ford, a retired professor from the IUPUI Department of Sociology, will share his experiences working with a therapy dog and discuss opportunities to provide a temporary home for dogs awaiting adoption. There will be several other presenters and exhibitors offering information about topics such as Master Gardening, Tour Group Travel, Music, etc.
