March 2013
Dear IUPUI Senior Academy Member:
With the changing of the clock to daylight savings time and the emergence of daffodils and tulips from their slumber, harbingers of Spring are everywhere. For the IUPUI Senior Academy, this means that it is time to begin the process of electing some new members to the SA board. Like most organizations, the Senior Academy solicits nominations from the membership, and then the SA Nominating Committee prepares a slate of candidates for election by the entire membership of the Senior Academy.
As a member of the IUPUI Senior Academy, will you please nominate someone for the SA Board? You are encouraged to carefully consider offering your own name as a candidate for Board membership. Please submit names and email addresses for nominees by April 5th.

Board Term: This year, we will elect six members for a two-year term on the Board.
Members elected to the SA Board in May will begin their two-year term of service in July.

Responsibilities of SA board members include attendance at monthly board meetings which are held on the second Thursday of each month at 10 am. Board members also need to be actively involved in planning programs for SA members, developing initiatives which permit retired IUPUI staff and faculty to remain engaged with the campus and community, and advancing the opportunities for the Senior Academy to maintain a strong connection with IUPUI and contribute to the enhancement of all facets of IUPUI.
The SA Nominations Committee is responsible for this election process. If you would like to learn more about serving on the Senior Academy Board of Directors, please contact any of the Nominations Committee members.
Current members of the SA Nominations Committee include:
Name email address
Bill Bosron wbosron@iupui.edu
Giles Hoyt ghoyt@iupui.edu
Walt Linne wlinne@iupui.edu
Randy Strate rwstrate@aol.com
Harriet Wilkins hwilkins@iupui.edu
Becky VanVoorhis, Chair rvanvoor@iupui.edu

We, on the SA Nominations Committee, look forward to receiving your nominations for new SA Board Members.

Emeritus Professor
of Pediatrics
Indiana University
School of Medicine

The Last Lecture Series offers the university community the opportunity to hear reflections on life’s lessons and meaning from a current or retired IUPUI colleague of exceptional merit. Each speaker will share the wisdom gained from past experiences and distill a life of inquiry, reflection, and service into important guidance for successive generations.
James A. Lemons is Hugh McK. Landon Professor of Pediatrics emeritus and past director of neonatal-perinatal medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He has developed major research programs in fetal and neonatal metabolism with continuous NIH funding and other grant support for over 30 years. Under his leadership, the neonatal-perinatal section has burgeoned and acquired a faculty with unrivaled, internationally recognized clinical, teaching, and research accomplishments in stem cell biology, fetal and neonatal metabolism, clinical and translational research, and international health care research. His areas of focus include women’s and children’s issues, and he remains actively engaged in supporting the School of Medicine’s ongoing partnership with the Riley Mother and Baby Hospital of Kenya in Eldoret, Kenya, which he was instrumental in establishing.
