Scholarship Winners:

President Bosron announced that the winners of the Senior Academy scholarships for 2012 are:

President Bosron also recognized and thanked those Board members who have completed their terms in office and are retiring from the Board:

Giles Hoyt, Mary Grove, Margaret Applegate, Leon Rand, Shirley Newhouse and Nick Kellum.

Program:

Rita T. Kohn, an Indiana Author, presented a program on “True Brew: a guide to craft beer in Indiana”.

Ms. Kohn is a senior writer for “NUVO Newsweekly – Beer Buzz”. She also was the senior editor of “Always a People: Oral Histories of Contemporary Woodland Indians” (IUP 1997), and Editor of “Long Journey Home: Oral Histories of Contemporary Delaware Indians” (IUP 2007).

Her presentation was both informative and entertaining. She not only shared the origins of beer – more ancient than many realized, but shared Indiana’s rich history in the brewing of beer. She provided interesting stories about the social history of brew masters both throughout history and in Indiana in the pursuit of handcrafted beers. The brewing of handcrafted beers has benefitted Indiana historically, culturally, socially, and economically – which she illustrated with her stories. She details this history in her book: “True Brew” (2007). She brought copies of her book for the review of the assembly.

Adjournment:

The meeting was adjourned and the assembly was invited to enjoy special Athenaeum hors d’oeuvres, soft drinks, coffee, and a hand crafted brew from Indiana.

Respectfully submitted,

Art reported that all three scholarships have reached an endowment level that guarantees continuation of the awards at their current level. The SA hopes to increase that level through further contributions. The focus of the SA for the campus Impact Campaign will be the three scholarships.

Presentation of the Bepko Community Medallion: Dr. George Rawls
The Bepko Community Medallion was awarded to Dr. George Rawls. This award was created by the IUPUI Senior Academy in 2003 to honor a person who has made a significant and ongoing commitment to strengthen the bonds between IUPUI and the larger community. The 3-inch Bepko medallion bears the image of former IUPUI Chancellor Gerald L. Bepko on one side and the recipient’s name and citation on the other. Recipients are listed on a plaque in the Senior Academy Room at the IUPUI Campus Center.

Dr. William Bosron presented the medallion to Dr. George Rawls. Dr. Rawls’ contributions to IUPUI, the IU School of Medicine, Florida A&M University and the Indianapolis and national communities clearly merit this award. Dr. Rawls has had a long and distinguished career as a surgeon in Indianapolis. He served as President of the Indianapolis and Indiana State Medical Societies. In recognition of his contributions to the medical profession and the community, the Marion County Health and Hospitals Corporation established a scholarship in his honor. Dr. Rawls served as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Clinical Professor of Surgery for 5 years at the IU School of Medicine. Indiana University awarded Dr. Rawls an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree in 2001. In recognition of his leadership in Indianapolis and Indiana, Dr. Rawls has received Sagamore of the Wabash awards from both Governor Orr and Governor Bayh. His service to his community goes beyond medicine. He is the author or co-author of five books that include an autobiography and that address issues related to medical education cost and access. He and his wife have endowed scholarships for students in the Master of Science in Medical Science program that Dr. Rawls designed at the School of Medicine to prepare more minority and disadvantaged students for medical school. He has served on the Boards of the Children’s Museum, Urban League and Indianapolis Zoo. His contributions are an example of service to his profession, especially as an outstanding mentor and role model for young medical students and physicians.

Program presentation: Dr. Norbert Krapf
President Giles Hoyt introduced Dr. Norbert Krapf to the assembly. Indiana Poet Laureate Norbert Krapf was born in 1943 in Jasper, Indiana, a German community in southern Indiana. He graduated from Jasper High School and received a B.A. degree in English from St Joseph’s College. He earned both an M.A. in English and a Ph.D. in English and American Literature from the University of Notre Dame with a concentration on American Poetry. Dr. Krapf taught at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University (1970-2004) where he is now emeritus Professor of English and where he was Poet Laureate (2003-2007). He also directed the C.W. Post Poetry Center. He twice served in Germany as a Senior Fulbright Professor of American Poetry at the Universities of Freiburg and Erlangen-Nuremberg. He was a U.S Exchange Teacher at West Oxon Technical College in England. In 2004 he moved to Indianapolis to write full time. In June, 2008, he was named Indiana Poet Laureate.

Dr. Krapf shared readings of both prose and poetry from several of his many books. As he shared his love of Indiana and his German heritage through his readings, it became clear why he was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. All members present enjoyed the opportunity to share with Dr. Krapf, a sample of his body of work.

Adjournment: The meeting adjourned and all present were invited to enjoy a reception featuring traditional German hors d’oeuvres and an optional tour of the historic Athenaeum led by Giles Hoyt.

Respectfully submitted,
Margaret Applegate, Secretary

Total Attendance

31 Senior Academy Members, 16 Guests

Call to order

President Harriet Wilkins called the meeting to order at 2:30 P.M.

President’s Welcome

Harriet Wilkins reviewed the Senior Academy events and achievements of the 2009-2010 academic year. It was a very positive year, thanks to the dedicated work of committees members on the various the Scholarship, Membership, Nominating, Finance, Last Lecture, Social, Program, and Communications committees. Harriet mentioned, particularly, the second Last Lecture by Professor Emerita Jan Shipps; many well-attended social events and programs and the progress in communications, including the listserv and improved Senior Sentinel, which is available in paper and electronic formats. She thanked the committee chairs and members for their work and pointed out that print summaries of committee accomplishments were placed on each table.

Harriet praised the cooperation and generous support of Chancellor Bantz and Dean Sukhatme in all Senior Academy projects, and announced that the Chancellor and Dean send greetings, although due to other commitments, they were not able to attend the Senior Academy annual meeting. She introduced Associate Vice Chancellor and Associate Dean of Faculties Mary L. Fisher.

Greetings from the Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties

Dr. Mary Fisher brought greetings from Chancellor Bantz and Dean Uday Sukhatme, who is in India attending to family matters following the death of his mother. She reviewed the changes in the past year, the new degree programs at IUPUI and the physical growth of the campus. Of particular note are the building projects connected with medical education and service: the alliance of Indiana University School of Medicine and Hospital, Riley Hospital, Wishard Hospital and Methodist Hospital and the change from the Clarian Healthcare designation to Indiana University Healthcare. Next fall, IUPUI’s enrollment is projected to top 31,000.

Program: “Lives in Retirement: Venturing Beyond the Ordinary”

Harriet announced that, since the committee reports are available in printed format, the board decided on a change of pace for this year’s annual meeting. Two Senior Academy retirees who have undertaken new ventures spoke about their post-retirement activities. Dr. Valerie Chang retired from the IU School of Social Work in 2006 and accepted an invitation for teach a course on social work pedagogy at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. She has taught the course for three semesters in one of poorest countries in the world, and she has met friendly colleagues and students who are serious, fully engaged, and eager to strive for perfection. Since retiring from the School of Liberal Arts in 2002, Dr. Patrick McGeever has written 16 plays, many of which have been produced in Indianapolis. His new one-act comedy, “David Austin,” read by Mary and Mark Grove, with McGeever reading the stage directions, involved a murder plot with a humorous outcome.

Announcement of Scholarship Winners

Committee chair Arthur Mirsky announced that the IPS Freshman Scholarship had been awarded to Binal Pandya, who plans to enroll at IUPUI as a Biology-pre-Med major. The Academic Scholarship was awarded to William Karr, Mathematics major. The Returning-Student scholarship was not awarded this year.

Senior Academy Future and Retiring Board Members

Current board members serving through 2011 are Marge Applegate, Ted Cutshall, Noel Duerden, Mark Grove, Mary Grove, Carlyn Johnson, and Golam Mannan. Elected to serve through 2012 are Patricia Blake, William Bosron, Giles Hoyt, Nicholas Kellum, Walt Linne, Arthur Mirsky, Shirley Newhouse, and Leon Rand. The following retiring board members were recognized: Joseph Hingtgen, Sheldon Siegel, William Voos, and Harriet Wilkins.

Officer Nominees for 2010-2011

The Nominating committee endorsed the following Senior Academy candidates for next academic year:

President: Giles Hoyt; Vice President: William Bosron; Secretary: Marge Applegate; Treasurer: Leon Rand. Election of officers will be held at the June 10 board meeting.

Adjournment and Reception

The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m. followed by a reception featuring traditional German food and a tour of the historic Athenaeum building provided by Giles Hoyt.
