Just as an adult putting on a Scout uniform makes you 11 years old again, so too does tagging along with grandchildren remind us of the fresh eyes of children exploring the world around them. Katie, 6, and Audrey, 4, are Jim and Becky Brown’s guides to fresh looks on the world.

The US Space and Rocket Center is very large. It has to be to hold a Saturn V rocket. While I am primarily a photographer of people, I enjoy making pictures with a restricted view. In photography, we call this the macro view. Macro is a relative term. I consider a piece of a Saturn rocket macro. But a picture of only two bolt heads is also macro. All of the pictures included in this show, put together for my granddaughters, were made with a Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens.

If you have a good internet connection, try the full-screen view by clicking the icon in the lower right corner. Wait while the program prepares that view.

Have your computer sound up.

Audrey, the 4 year old, played the show repeatedly. Katie played it once at then played her DVD of Pixar shorts on the TV. With this sample of two, I can say that I can still hold the attention of a 4 year old. Past 6 years of age, it’s questionable.

At a practice the night before, a competing team participant observing Brown’s start said, “Wow this is really hard-core. Look at that old man go!”

Other team members were Marcos Dominguez, an alum of the School of Journalism, and Denis Jimenez and Zach Furman both student in journalism. Moreland, Dominguez, Jimenez and Fuhrman are Brown’s former students. The pictures were made by Mike Wolanin, also one of Brown’s students.

Dear Faculty Club Colleagues,

Now is the time to renew your Club membership for the 2010-2011 academic year, if you haven’t done so already. I’m pleased to tell you that our events this year will feature a very special reception and wine tasting, for Club members only, with Chancellor Bantz at Cedar Crest on September 21, 5:30-7:00. Members in good standing will receive invitations in early September, so you’ll want to be sure to renew soon and then watch for the invitation.

We have a super line-up of RaTTs and SALTs planned for this year; please check the schedule at facultyclub.iupui.edu for details and to link to the online registration site. The RaTT series kicks off on September 2 when Thomas Davis of the Department of Religious Studies talks about his new volume, John Calvin’s American Legacy. SALT begins on September 29 with Eric R. Dannenmeier of the School of Law, whose talk is titled “All Too Quiet on the Midwestern Front: Are We Too Entrenched to See Energy Security as National Security?” I hope you’ll be able to join us for both of these thought-provoking series of lunchtime lecture/discussions. The charge this year will be $10/person (rather than the $12,90 charged in past years), which includes the normal lunch charge of $8.45, tax, and gratuity.

To renew, go to the Faculty Club web site at facultyclub.iupui.edu, and click on the “membership” link and then on the application form. Annual dues are the same as last year, $75 for continuing members. New members pay $40 and receive a free lunch with the membership fee, so I hope you’ll also encourage your colleagues, especially those new to IUPUI, to join. And remember that the Club is open to all IUPUI staff, as well as faculty members. The always excellent buffet lunch remains a bargain at $8.45!

I encourage you to renew right away and I look forward to seeing you often at the Club!

Best,
Susan

Susan Kahn
President
University Faculty Club in Indianapolis

I first attended the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1960 as a fresh Eagle Scout. The trip to the Jamboree also included a three-day hike at Philmont, in New Mexico, a white-water rafting experience and an overnight stay at the Koshare Indian Kiva in La Junta, Colo., with a performance by the Koshare dancers.

Beginning in 1989, I joined the national staff of the Jamboree with my first position in media relations. At a later Jamboree, I proposed the Jamboree website and was the founding website director. More recently I have served on the photography staff. This year was the last of the Jamborees to be held at Fort A. P. Hill, Va. The new permanent location for the Jamboree beginning in 2013 will be The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in W. Va.

The photo staff are all professionals and we make the archival pictures for the national office of the Boy Scouts and feed pictures to the daily newspaper, Jamboree Today, and the Jamboree website.

Each photographer covers one of the many religious services and I choose the Episcopal service. Click the play icon below to get a flavor of that service (computer sound up).

Fort A.P. Hill is comprised of 75,000 acres of woodlands. It’s a big place. Some of the Scouts have to hike as long as three hours to get to the arena shows. I encountered a particularly gregarious bunch along the route. I had my digital recorder in one hand and my camera in the other. Click the play icon below to get a sense of the spirit these Scouts demonstrated (computer sound up).

One of the popular spots at the Jamboree is Brownsea Island, a reinactment of Lieutenant-General Baden-Powell’s original Scout camp begun in 1907. It was here that Baden-Powell tested his ideas for his book Scouting for Boys and is considered the origin of Scouting. At this first camp the leadership structure and the patrol system were laid out and still persist today. Competitive games were developed to enhance skills and provide fun. Click the play button below to see a sampling of the experiences at Brownsea Island (computer sound up).

The President of the United States often visits the Jamboree at one of the arena shows. In 1960, President Eisenhower stood up in a convertible while being slowly driven through 60,000 people. With the Kennedy assassination, also in an open convertible, everything changed. I have seen, first-hand, the intense security now imposed on the appearance of the President. To know that the security measures needed now are necessary saddens me.

Margaret Applegate, Noel Duerden, Mark Grove, Mary Grove, Giles Hoyt, Carlyn Johnson, Golam Mannan, Shirley Newhouse, Leon Rand, William Voos, Harriet Wilkins

Board Member absent

Ted Cutshall

Total Attendance

31 Senior Academy Members, 16 Guests

Call to order

President Harriet Wilkins called the meeting to order at 2:30 P.M.

President’s Welcome

Harriet Wilkins reviewed the Senior Academy events and achievements of the 2009-2010 academic year. It was a very positive year, thanks to the dedicated work of committees members on the various the Scholarship, Membership, Nominating, Finance, Last Lecture, Social, Program, and Communications committees. Harriet mentioned, particularly, the second Last Lecture by Professor Emerita Jan Shipps; many well-attended social events and programs and the progress in communications, including the listserv and improved Senior Sentinel, which is available in paper and electronic formats. She thanked the committee chairs and members for their work and pointed out that print summaries of committee accomplishments were placed on each table.

Harriet praised the cooperation and generous support of Chancellor Bantz and Dean Sukhatme in all Senior Academy projects, and announced that the Chancellor and Dean send greetings, although due to other commitments, they were not able to attend the Senior Academy annual meeting. She introduced Associate Vice Chancellor and Associate Dean of Faculties Mary L. Fisher.

Greetings from the Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties

Dr. Mary Fisher brought greetings from Chancellor Bantz and Dean Uday Sukhatme, who is in India attending to family matters following the death of his mother. She reviewed the changes in the past year, the new degree programs at IUPUI and the physical growth of the campus. Of particular note are the building projects connected with medical education and service: the alliance of Indiana University School of Medicine and Hospital, Riley Hospital, Wishard Hospital and Methodist Hospital and the change from the Clarian Healthcare designation to Indiana University Healthcare. Next fall, IUPUI’s enrollment is projected to top 31,000.

Program: “Lives in Retirement: Venturing Beyond the Ordinary”

Harriet announced that, since the committee reports are available in printed format, the board decided on a change of pace for this year’s annual meeting. Two Senior Academy retirees who have undertaken new ventures spoke about their post-retirement activities. Dr. Valerie Chang retired from the IU School of Social Work in 2006 and accepted an invitation for teach a course on social work pedagogy at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. She has taught the course for three semesters in one of poorest countries in the world, and she has met friendly colleagues and students who are serious, fully engaged, and eager to strive for perfection. Since retiring from the School of Liberal Arts in 2002, Dr. Patrick McGeever has written 16 plays, many of which have been produced in Indianapolis. His new one-act comedy, “David Austin,” read by Mary and Mark Grove, with McGeever reading the stage directions, involved a murder plot with a humorous outcome.

Announcement of Scholarship Winners

Committee chair Arthur Mirsky announced that the IPS Freshman Scholarship had been awarded to Binal Pandya, who plans to enroll at IUPUI as a Biology-pre-Med major. The Academic Scholarship was awarded to William Karr, Mathematics major. The Returning-Student scholarship was not awarded this year.

Senior Academy Future and Retiring Board Members

Current board members serving through 2011 are Marge Applegate, Ted Cutshall, Noel Duerden, Mark Grove, Mary Grove, Carlyn Johnson, and Golam Mannan. Elected to serve through 2012 are Patricia Blake, William Bosron, Giles Hoyt, Nicholas Kellum, Walt Linne, Arthur Mirsky, Shirley Newhouse, and Leon Rand. The following retiring board members were recognized: Joseph Hingtgen, Sheldon Siegel, William Voos, and Harriet Wilkins.

Officer Nominees for 2010-2011

The Nominating committee endorsed the following Senior Academy candidates for next academic year:

President: Giles Hoyt; Vice President: William Bosron; Secretary: Marge Applegate; Treasurer: Leon Rand. Election of officers will be held at the June 10 board meeting.

Adjournment and Reception

The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m. followed by a reception featuring traditional German food and a tour of the historic Athenaeum building provided by Giles Hoyt.
