Criteria for Maximum Blood Draws
The committee's concern pertains to the potential for iron deficiency and hemoglobin deprivation related to high blood draw volume. The focus of this concern is not necessarily for the subject who participates in a single study, but for a subject that participates in more than one study per year. That subject may incur added risk.

Additionally, the committee notes that the adult criteria for maximum blood draws are not appropriate for children. For children participating in a research study, the Committee offers guidance that the maximum blood draw in an acute study should not exceed 5% blood volume. Questions should be directed to the Research Compliance office: E-mail resrisk@iupui.edu or call 274-8289.
