NEW "FREEDOM FUNDS" ASSISTS IN THE ANTI-TERRORISM EFFORTS
In response to the events from September 11, 2001 and customer requests, COS has created "Freedom Funds," a special member section focusing on grants that address needs related to the crisis.

This new service highlights more than 18,000 funding opportunities, worth over $1.64 billion, related to security and anti-terrorism research - research whose importance has been underscored by the events of September 11th. Drawn directly from COS Funding Opportunities, a database of over 400,000 individual research grants, this section features current public and private sector needs in the areas of national and international security, weapons and surveillance technology, health safety, disaster response, bioterrorism, international relations, as well as Central Asian and Middle Eastern studies.

For more information on Freedom Funds, visit http://fundingopps.cos.com/freedom and to read the full press release, go to http://www.cos.com/news/pr/pr_freedomfunds.shtml.

Be sure to log in to your COS Workbench to update your COS Funding Alert searches to include appropriate keywords, so you can receive funding notifications that are targeted to your needs.

U.S. GOVERNMENT AGENCIES ARE SEARCHING FOR EXPERTS
"I Need Scientists!" said Governor Tom Ridge, director of the U.S. Office of Homeland Security, which also appeared as the headline of an article featured in the November 5, 2001 issue of Newsweek. It referred to the outcome of a recent meeting between President Bush, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson, and other officials regarding contradictory opinions about the latest anthrax test results.

This variance of opinion indicates the need to gather together the best scientists. Even President Bush ordered Ridge and others to get the facts and solve the problem fast according to the article.

Not coincidentally, an increasing number of government agencies have been turning to COS to find experts. COS enables these agencies to identify and contact the most capable individuals. Can they find you?

As a member of Community of Science, this is the ideal time to update your COS Expertise profile. Encourage your staff and colleagues to do the same. Include appropriate keywords and your most recent research and publications to take advantage of emerging opportunities and help government officials find you and your faculty.

If you need any assistance in locating funding or in updating your COS profile, contact Ann Kratz, the COS liaison at IUPUI. She can be reached at 278-0249, by e-mail akratz@iupui.edu, or stop in to see her in UL 1140.

Modified IRB Continuing Review Form
When completing the modified form, now expanded to 2-pages, it may appear that new questions have been added for investigators to answer. However, these questions were included on previous versions of the form and are now accentuated to ensure that they are addressed comprehensively. In the summary portion of the form, investigators and coordinators completing the form for studies where subjects have been seen in the last year should note that the IRB will be unlikely to accept responses such as "no results available," etc. If you have any questions, please contact the Research Compliance office: e-mail resrisk@iupui.edu or call 274-8289.

ERA System Update
New ERA Staff
Bethany Davis, Contact & Grant Systems Consultant, has recently joined the ERA Team as the Functional Lead (replacing Lisa Dinsmore). Lora O'Connor has been appointed as the Technical Lead with Terry Durkin and Bo-Rim Lee working as development staff assigned to the ERA project.

December 6th Release
There are two major items included in the December 6th release. The first item is a reformatted overview sheet. Input was gathered from departments and both research offices to create a more visually appealing document. Some formatting changes include an enlarged due date, bold responses rather than bold questions, additional summary information supplied as a header, and a significantly more compact document.

The second item included is the addition of a Percent Credit field. In order to share credit for a project, the submitting department or school may want to assign a percentage to another unit. In the current release, the credit can be shared between the Project Director and other Co-Investigators; however, in the future we hope to have the capability to assign credit to additional departments or schools. The field will default to 100% of the credit assigned to the submitting organization, and it will be the department's responsibility to distribute the percentages accordingly. The data entry field for Percent Credit will appear on the Assign Director and Co-Director screen as well as on the Overview screen.

Budget Module
The Budget Module is currently in the development phase with a goal of a spring release date. Testing will occur in March and departments who are early adopters will be notified of the specifications via e-mail at a later date.
