IUPUI HRPP Receives Qualified Accreditation Requiring Revisions to IRB Policies, Procedures, and Forms
In March of 2005, the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) received qualified accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP). The HRPP at IUPUI exists to protect the rights and welfare of human research participants recruited to participate in research conducted under the auspices of Indiana University. AAHRPP was founded by seven organizations engaged in research activities, including the Association of American Medical College (AMC), Association of American Universities (AAU), and Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R). In 2001, AAHRPP became incorporated as a non-profit organization offering accreditation to institutions that conduct or review research with human participants. AAHRPP seeks not only to ensure compliance, but to raise the bar in human research protection by helping institutions reach performance standards that surpass the threshold of state and federal requirements. AAHRPP accreditation is currently a voluntary program; however, it is quickly becoming the national trend for institutions that have a strong commitment to protecting research participants.

Because the process of achieving accreditation required a very detailed self-assessment process, as well as an extensive site visit review, which included interviews with over 80 investigators, research staff, and institutional officials, it allowed IUPUI to improve its HRPP by recognizing strengths and bringing to light weaknesses. AAHRPP’s high standards raised the benchmark for the ethical soundness and scientific merit of research conducted at IUPUI. Achieving qualified accreditation status shows regulatory agencies that we maintain high ethical standards and are committed to self-regulation and makes our program more attractive to sponsors.

New Authorization Form Available for Research with Minors
A new authorization form for research with minors, “IUPUI–Clarian Authorization for the Release of Minor’s Health Information for Research”, is available on the Research and Sponsored Programs (R&SP) Web site. The parent or legal guardian of a minor has the right to determine who may review or use the minor’s Protected Health Information (PHI) and must give permission for the release of the PHI from the minor’s doctors, clinics, and hospitals to the research team for a specific research study purpose. The form may be accessed from the Research Compliance HIPAA page http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/hipaa/hipaa_menu.htm.
