Human Subjects
IRB Approves New Process for Approval of Amendments and Continuing Reviews
The IRBs will now review and approve, if appropriate, amendments and continuing reviews before comments are received from the Office of Compliance Services.

As part of complying with the new HIPAA regulations, the Research Compliance Administration office has consulted with the Office of Compliance Services in the School of Medicine (SOM) to ensure adequate confidentiality and safeguards exist for your research study. Compliance Officers are reviewing Section VIII of the summary safeguard statement. As part of their review, you may be receiving further communication from our office if clarification or additional information is requested after amendments and/or continuing reviews have been approved by the IRB. At that time, you may be asked to make changes to Section VIII of the summary safeguard statement (SSS) or submit clarifications.

Rationale: Because of the increased workload put on the SOM Compliance Office with the new HIPAA requirements, it is taking additional time to receive their comments regarding Section VIII of the SSS. In an attempt to process amendments and continuing reviews in a timely manner, we felt it was necessary to implement a process whereby amendments and continuing reviews may be approved, with the understanding that additional information or clarification may be requested regarding the HIPAA-specific information.

This policy applies to minor or major amendments, as well as full board continuing reviews, and continuing reviews for expedited studies that are still enrolling new subjects.

Proposals & Awards
NIH ERA Commons
Depending on the user’s role, different permissions are granted. For example, principal investigators may review the current status of their grant applications and view detailed information associated with their grants. Principal investigators also may enter a personal profile that includes their degrees, publications, and contact information. Grantee officials may access a summary view of grant applications, Notices of Grant Awards, and progress report face pages. Financial officials may prepare and submit expenditure reports.

For further information about the NIH Commons and to tour a demonstration site, go to http://commons.era.nih.gov/. To access the NIH Commons, you must have Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater or Netscape 3.0 or greater. You must also enable Cookies and JavaScript on your browser. The system is now at a point where access is being offered to any school or department that wishes to begin utilizing the electronic tools. Individual faculty and researchers, wanting to move forward with ERA account access, need to contact their academic department, as well as, Avery Nelson avnelson@iupui.edu or 317.274.8285 to initiate the account access process.
