Fires
If you discover a fire, explosion or smoke in a building, pull the nearest fire alarm. You should proceed to evacuate. You may warn others by yelling "fire, fire" as you go down the stairs or hallway. You may call the IUPUI Police Department at 911 on a university phone or (317) 274-7911 if the building does not contain an automatic fire alarm system or if there is a need to give immediate information.
If the fire is small enough to be extinguished and you have had extinguisher training, use a portable fire extinguisher to put out the fire. If you have any doubts about the size of the fire or your ability to extinguish it, do not try. Evacuate! Never attempt to put out a fire yourself until someone has notified the authorities.
When a fire alarm sounds, the law requires complete evacuation of the building. Close doors behind you as you leave. Do not use elevators unless instructed to do so by the fire department. Move away from the building to a safe area. Do not block the doors. Do not go back into the building until you are instructed to do so by authorities.
Make a point of knowing the location of the nearest manual pull station and the nearest fire extinguisher to the area where you normally work.
Report potential hazards to Fire Protection Services at 274-8000.
