Bomb Threats

Most bomb threats are received by telephone. The person receiving the telephone call should remain calm and obtain as much information as possible by using the checklist found below. Also, if your phone is equipped with caller identification, write the number down that is on the display screen.

Immediately call the IUPUI Police Department at 911. Inform them of the situation with as much information as is available; specifically the location and time the bomb is supposed to explode. Inform your immediate supervisor after informing the police.

The IUPUI Police Department will probably ask those working in the area to assist with the search as they will be more familiar with what does and does not belong. If a suspicious package or device is found immediately notify the police. DO NOT TOUCH OR HANDLE the suspicious item.

Public Safety will be responsible for ordering the evacuation of the building after consultation with the building administrator.

Written threats can come in the form of a note, letter or fax, through the U.S. mail, campus mail, or the office fax machine. If the bomb threat is received by written communication, immediately notify the IUPUI Police Department by calling 911. Do not handle the communication any more than is absolutely necessary and surrender this document to the IUPUI Police upon their arrival.
