Steps Taken by IUPUI

In response to the growing presence of the H1N1 Flu Virus in the United States, IUPUI is taking the following steps:

Flu Disinfection Procedures and Protocols

Nov. 3, 2009: In case of a pandemic flu outbreak, campus departments will be responsible for disinfecting frequently touched surfaces within their work area and would have other disinfecting responsibilities not assigned to CFS Building Services, and Housing and Residence Life.

The IUPUI Environmental Health and Safety unit has issued disinfection procedures and protocols for campus department during a flu outbreak.

For a complete listing of procedures and protocols, which include disinfection guidelines, listing of items recommended for disinfecting, and disinfecting supplies, go to http://www.ehs.iupui.edu/ehs/H1N1_Information.asp.

Free H1N1 Vaccinations

Free H1N1 Vaccinations: IUPUI Health Services expects to get significant amounts of the H1N1 Vaccine from the Marion County Health Department during the week of Oct. 19, 2009. Once the vaccines arrive, Health Services will hold flu vaccination clinics for IUPUI staff and students. Times and locations of these clinics will be announced via JagNews, JagTV, Inside IUPUI and other campus communication channels. Information regarding these clinics will be updated daily on the IUPUI Health Services website: www.health.iupui.edu.

The flu clinics will provide free H1N1 vaccinations for IUPUI faculty, staff and students who belong to the CDC priority groups of individuals who should receive vaccinations.

Priority groups

These groups are:

  1. Pregnant women
  2. People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
  3. Persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years
  4. Health care workers
  5. Emergency responders
  6. Adults, up to age 64 who have chronic medical conditions (pulmonary disorders, including asthma; cardiovascular (except hypertension); and renal, hepatic, cognitive, neurological/neuromuscular, hematological or metabolic disorders, including diabetes)
  7. Adults up to age 64 who have weakened immune systems caused by medications or HIV

Along with hand hygiene and cough etiquette, the single most important thing that people can do to protect themselves from H1N1 flu is to get the H1N1 vaccine.

IUPUI staff and students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to receive H1N1 flu vaccinations during campus clinics.

Flu Procedures

  • All students who are reporting to IUPUI Health Services with any flu-like symptoms are being monitored according to the protocols set by the Indiana State Department of Health.
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizer stations are being placed on campus in high-traffic areas.
  • Posters advising regular hand washing and cough etiquette to prevent the spread of germs have been posted throughout campus.
  • Emergency response personnel are conducting continuous monitoring of all relevant local, state, federal, and international information (i.e. Marion County Health Department, Indiana State Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization, etc.)
  • IUPUI has 17 committees of faculty and staff working to fully develop all necessary response protocols for a significant outbreak of 2009 H1N1 pandemic flu on campus. This includes care of ill students, communications with the IUPUI community, and continuity of campus operations.
  • IUPUI is working closely with Indiana University Bloomington to coordinate prevention and response activities.
  • IUPUI will issue periodic updates or alerts campus-wide if the situation in the state or on the campus changes and has the potential to affect the IUPUI community.
