Weather Update

May 25, 2011
8:35pm EDT

We have significant weather activity occurring tonight, and it will continue for several more hours. The conditions are favorable for damaging winds, lightning, and tornadoes, which are significant personal safety risks. IU's policy, which is required by the Federal Clery Act, is to provide notification to any and all IU personnel who may be at risk of injury due to a hazardous condition. Tornado warnings fall into the category of an Emergency: "An incident or condition, expected or unexpected, that threatens life or safety and requires immediate action."

IU will issue an IU-Notify alert for each campus experiencing a National Weather Service-issued Tornado Warning. Both the alert for the life safety hazard and an all-clear/expiration alert are required by the Clery Act. Due to the changing weather conditions this evening and overnight, you may experience a number of these alerts. Be assured that they are not duplicates, and you need to take action based on each warning.

If a Tornado Warning is issued for your campus, go immediately to the lowest level of the building you are in, away from windows, and seek safe shelter. Follow instructions from your campus authorities. Tornado threats are real and a warning indicates that a tornado (or rotation significant enough to cause a tornado) has been sighted. While in your sheltered location, monitor your local radio station or a NOAA All-Hazards radio for additional information. For specific information on what to do for the type of building or vehicles, visit http://weather.gov/indy.

Thank you for your help in protecting the IU community.
