Margie Ferguson joined the IUPUI Department of Political Science in 1996, after completing her Ph.D. in political science at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Her dissertation title was "Gubernatorial Policy Leadership in the Fifty States," in which she reviewed the progress of bills in state legislatures in the fifty states during 1993-1994 to determine whether bills that were endorsed by governors fared better than those that were not.

In 1993, Margie received her M.A. in political science, also from the University of North Carolina. She completed her B.A. in political science at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1990.

Professor Ferguson's teaching interests within the field of American politics include state and local politics, executive politics, legislative politics, and welfare policy. While completing her Ph.D., she worked on welfare policy issues as a Research Associate at the University of North Carolina's Human Services Research and Design Laboratory.
