P120 – Ethics – Second Exam – Due in class October 20th, 2009

 

Answer any three of these questions.  These questions are worth 35 points each, thus the total points available on this test is 105 points.  Tests should be typed, double-spaced, and turned in no later than class on October 20th, 2009.  Consultation of books and class notes while working on this test is permitted.  Consultation with other students is also permitted but caution is urged so as to avoid turning in work that is not your own.  Reference to any work other than your own must be cited.  If you consult any texts, please keep quotations short and to the point.

 

1.      What are the main differences between hypothetical and categorical imperatives?  Why does Kant claim the moral law can only be expressed in the form of a categorical imperative?  Is Kant right?  Explain.

 

2.      How does Kant explain the difference between perfect and imperfect duties?  According to Kant, would it be permissible to tell a lie if the lie might save someone’s life?  Explain Kant’s position on this and whether or not you agree.

 

3.      People in distress often make "false promises" in order to alleviate their situation. According to Kant, is such action in accordance with the moral law or not? Paying particular attention to his understanding of the categorical imperative and what it prescribes, explain Kant’s position on this. Do you agree with Kant? Why or why not?

 

4.   According to Vine Deloria, museums, universities, and historical societies claim that Indian remains are of significant educational and scientific value.  Explain in some detail why Deloria disagrees with this claim.  What does he take to be the principal justification for the warehousing of Indian remains?  Do you think Deloria is correct? Explain.
