Camp Reservations Update
From Wendy Iskander
In the next few weeks, second invoices for reservations will begin to be mailed. In years’ past, a survival guide was mailed. This year, information will be posted on the Web site. Please plan to check here after Monday, May 12, 2008 to view what you will need to bring to camp this summer.
Reservations are filling up fast. Weeks one, four, six and seven are sold out, and week eight only has two remaining accommodations. Weeks two, three, and five still have some space available, so if you haven’t yet made your reservation, please check these weeks and make your reservation soon!
Camp Renovations Update
From Dean Nick Kellum
In preparation for camp season, several renovations have occurred during the fall, winter, and spring. Rustic cabin renovations are complete and include all new furnishings. The Sputh Round House also is completely renovated and by the time camp opens, will be filled with new furniture. Hickory and Kellum House also have new furniture and have experienced some remodeling. Click here to see the progress.
Upgrades that are not visible to the casual observer but just as important to the safety and comfort of guests are being implemented throughout the property. These include gas, electric, and water line improvements and updates.
Indiana University architects visited the property last fall and identified two immediate concerns: the Inn and the office. Plans are complete to refurbish the 100-year-old Inn structure and upgrade the utilities and ventilation system. Unfortunately, it is not feasible to salvage the current office. Instead, the architects plan to relocate the office to the existing garage, and construct a new garage and apartment on the “lower forty”.
If enough money is raised, these projects may be initiated next fall. As I prepare for my retirement, one of my goals is to ensure that camp facilities are improved so that a new Dean will be able to embrace camp and move forward in a positive direction. I have contributed personally to this effort and hope that all of you will, too. Every gift is important, as each contribution helps to ensure that camp will remain a viable Indiana University entity for many years to come.
Many giving options are available, including annual gifts, multi-year pledges, combined gifts, memorial contributions, and gifts of securities or via one’s will. Please contact Laura Klaum to learn how you can help make an investment in Camp Brosius’ future.
Volunteer Weekend
From Wiley and Mary Craft
As we gear up for family camp, we were thrilled to have more than 36 volunteers assist us this past weekend with camp’s annual opening weekend. Volunteers unloaded semi-truckloads of new bunk-beds, dressers, shelves, desks, nightstands, and mattresses. After the unloading occurred, they helped carry these to cabins, where they assembled approximately 50 new sets of bunk-beds, hung mirrors, and arranged furniture.
Volunteers also helped open and clean cabins, hang curtains, weed gardens, pick up trash, till the play area, rake barrels full of leaves, move furniture and boats out of storage, and countless other time-consuming tasks that required hours of labor-intensive volunteer service.
We were thrilled and grateful beyond words to have the support of such dedicated volunteers this past weekend and look forward to future work weekends as well as fun this summer with our extended Brosius family. Hope to see you soon.
