Requesting Visa Documents for Dependents

Students and researchers who are already at IUPUI may request visa documents for their family to join them in the U.S. If the family members are direct dependents (spouse, children), the student or scholar must be able to support for them financially and are required to purchase health insurance coverage for them. (For individuals who would like to invite their parents from countries where documentary requirements are particularly strict, the Office of International Affairs will assist you by providing a letter of support using the procedures below.)

In addition to their own living expenses, students or researchers must show that they have $7,500 per year available for their first dependent (spouse or child) and $5,000 per year available for each additional dependent.

To obtain a visa document for your family:

  1. Submit the Family Data Sheet to the Office of International Affairs. You may also pick up the form at our front desk.
  2. An advisor at the Office of International Affairs will contact you.
  3. If your current visa document does not indicate sufficient funds to support dependent(s), bring a bank statement showing the required funds.*
  4. The Advisor will prepare visa documents and letters of support, as appropriate, and give instructions for dependents to obtain the required visa.

*For individuals from countries where the U.S. consulates are particularly strict (i.e., P.R. China), it is recommended that you provide evidence of financial history, such as W-2/1042S payroll statements, pay stubs showing cumulated monthly earnings, or bank statements showing your banking history over a period of several months.

NOTE: J-2 dependents may apply for work permission from the Immigration and Naturalization Service, but F-2 and H-4 dependents may not work in the U.S.
