Authorization for J-1 Professors/Researchers to Receive Compensation for Short-Term Consultations or Occasional Lectures

Eligibility

A J-1 professor or researcher may receive compensation for giving occasional lectures or performing short-term consultations when the following criteria are met:

  • The activity is occasional or short-term, generally a single event rather than an ongoing activity.
  • The activity is directly related to the objectives of the individual's J-1 program.
  • The activity is incidental to the individual's primary program activities.
  • The activity will not delay the completion date of the individual's J-1 program.
  • The individual must act as an independent contractor; he/she cannot receive compensation as an employee or via a payroll system and should not be required to complete an I-9.

Procedures

1. The organization requesting the lecture or consultation must provide a letter detailing the terms and conditions of the offer, including the following:

  • a description of the activity that is to take place
  • the field or subject of the activity
  • the duration of time and number of hours involved
  • the amount of compensation to be provided

2. The professor or researcher's supervisor must provide a letter recommending the activity and explaining how it would enhance the exchange visitor's program at IUPUI.

3. After receiving these two letters, the Office of International Affairs will review the proposed activity and provide written authorization to the exchange visitor if the activity falls within the regulatory guidelines outlined above.

To ensure that the compensation is allowable and there is no violation of J1 status, this authorization needs to be obtained before the activity takes place.
