USCIS Address Reporting Requirement
The U.S.C.I.S. is currently enforcing a federal law requiring change of address reporting. This law requires that all non-U.S. citizens in the U.S., including permanent residents ("green card" holders), must report their new address to the USCIS within ten (10) days of moving to a new address.
F-1/J-1 Students
Please update your change of address to your LOCAL address in OneStart. OIA will automatically forward this information into the SEVIS system. You are not required to file any additional forms with the USCIS.
J-1 Scholars
If you are an employee, you must report your address changes to the Payroll Office. The university will automatically forward this information into the SEVIS system. You are not required to file any additional forms with the USCIS. If you are not employed by IUPUI, e-mail your address change to intlaff@iupui.edu.
All other immigrant/non-immigrant categories
The USCIS form for completing this requirement is the AR-11.
Instructions for completing the AR-11
The form is “fillable,” meaning that you can complete it online, and then print the completed form for signature and submission. Following are a few tips to help you complete the form:
Line 2. After the large A, type in the number from your I-94 if you are in the U.S. with a temporary visa. If you have a permanent status, you will put your “A” number there.
Line 6. You can complete line 6 with:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Line 7. You may use either your department address or the Office of International Affairs address:
902 W. New York St., ES 2126 Indianapolis IN 46202-5167
Line 8. The Port of Entry is the land border crossing or the first U.S. airport you traveled through when you last entered the U.S..
Signature and mailing. Make sure you sign the form, and send it to the address listed in red on the USCIS web site. We suggest that you send the form using a method that allows you to verify delivery, such as certified mail through the U.S. Postal Service, to ensure that you have a record that you have a record of complying with this INS requirement.
Reporting address changes to the University
It is also important for you to keep your address current with the University, as the University also has address reporting requirements for students and scholars. If you are a student, update your address using OneStart; if you are an employee, report all address changes to the Payroll Office.
Non-immigrants Subject to Special Registration
If you are a non-immigrant subject to Special Registration, you must complete form AR-11SR in order to report your address to the USCIS. If you have an “FIN” number written on your I-94 card, then you fall into this category. Generally, the category includes non-immigrants from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Egypt, Eritrea, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Lebanon, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. However, any non-immigrant can be subject to Special Registration at the discretion of the admitting immigration official. If your I-94 is not marked with an “FIN” number, then you are not subject to Special Registration.
Form AR-11SR is filled out in the same way as the AR-11, except that your FIN number will be required. Please see the AR-11 instructions above.
Exception: F-1 and J-1 students and scholars only need to report address changes to the University. It is not necessary to complete the AR-11 or AR-11SR.
